32 GPS Satellites Working Today?

In a bit of geeky GPS news, the GPS system has another helpful hand today after the US Military announced that a new satellite is now set to “healthy”.

GPS SATELLITE SVN23 (PRN32) WAS USABLE AS OF JDAY 057 (26 FEB 2008)
BEGINNING 1801 ZULU.

After launching a new satellite it is tested for an extended period before it is set to start broadcasting official information. Today at 1:00pm Eastern Standard time the new satellite, SVN23, is now “healthy”. This makes 32 healthy satellites in the GPS system.

A few older GPS devices might not recognize the new bird, though most should be able to pick it up if it flies over your head. It will identify itself as PRN32, or with the way most GPS devices display satellite information it will appear as satellite 32. I’ll be watching for it. :)

Update: I did just catch a short glimpse of PRN32 for the first time since it was deemed healthy.

  1. I’ve seen #32. It seems to be overhead during my evening commute the past two days.
