Back to English with TomTom

So you’ve got that brand new shiny TomTom, turned it on, and …. OOPS! … somehow you’ve selected the wrong language. Suddenly the entire interface is (literally) in some foreign language and you can’t figure out how to get back to English. This has happened to quite a few people recently, so here is a short tutorial on how to get back to US English.

TomTom Main MenuIf the device is currently turned on and you are anywhere but the primary map/driving view, it might be helpful to turn the device off. Then you can turn it back on to get yourself to the map/driving view. Now click anywhere on the map to take you to the Main Menu. Depending on the language you picked and your device, it should look something like the image on the right. Click on the wrench icon (highlighted in red here) which will take you to the ‘Change Preferences’ menu.

TomTom Change LanguageNow that you are in the Change Preferences menu, keep tapping on the right arrow button to cycle through the menu until you see an icon with three flags on it. That is the ‘Change Language’ button. Click on that button to bring up a list of the languages installed on your device.

TomTom English USUse the arrow keys up and down to find your language, likely ‘English US’ for most readers of this site. A dialog will appear asking “English US?” at which point you will say ‘Yes’. Presto, change-o, you are back in business!

  1. After picking the country, which side is “yes” going to be on? We won’t always recognize “Yes” in the language being used.

  2. After picking the country, the Yes/No will be displayed in the new language you just selected, so you should recognize it. ;)

However if you get to that point and have picked the wrong language again, Red = No and Green = Yes.

  8. I bought a TomTom and used it to tour the US. It was great and on our return to NZ I have tried to buy the NZ maps for our device. I went through the procedure on the website and successfully paid TomTom 60 pounds for a download. But then I tried to upload it onto my device (TomTom IQ) and it told me I can’t

There is no way that I can find to write to TomTom. Can anyone help me make the map I bought work on the device or get my 60 pounds back or get in touch with TomTom so they can help.

  9. I received this as a Christmas gift from my husband who thought he knew how to set it up but couldnt. I had to use google translate to try and figure out what the Afrikaan language was telling me. After figuring out what everything was..I stumbled upon this site….thanks so much because TOM TOM didnt have this info in the manual nor did they have it on their site. This site was like Christmas to me!!!!!! Thanks so much

  19. Mine starts on the roadway bridge, then goes to Swedish or Danish. I ‘googled’ the words and it says ‘no maps available.’ Tried to reset with on/off button. Downloaded program from Tomtom site. Nothing helps.

  27. This page is wonderful! I loaned my GPS to my brother for the first time, and he ended up changing the language to German. The worst thing, he did not know how he did it.
Thanks to your step by step instructions I was able to get my device to show the US English.
    Happy Holidays!
