In theory-- you could almost test it by turning off the electronic compass and barometric pressure gauge on the PN-40. It might not be 100% valid, but could be an indicator. However.... DeLorme tells me that the electronic compass and barometric pressure sensor on the PN-40 use very little battery and that the dual-processor is the big hog. When I've turned off the electronic compass and barometric pressure sensor on the PN-40 I don't see much change in battery life which seems to support what DeLorme says, however a real test of the PN-30 as you say would trump any speculation.

When the PN-30 gets reviewed, I would hope to see a direct comparison between it and the PN-40. One thing I've noticed on other GPS units is that battery life is reportedly better on those units without a barometric altimeter and electronic compass. As the PN-40 seems rather battery hungry, the PN-30 could be a welcome alternative for those who don't require those two features and desire longer battery life.

And I forgot to mention, a barometric altimeter is only as accurate as the known altitude/pressure reading at the current time and place. A barometer will only show you pressure increase/decrease of the weather as it changes. Really good for letting you know if the weather is going to change for better or worse. For more accurate altimeter readings, I prefer to trust a 32 channel satellite triangulation.

The pn-30 just came out after the pn-40. It has no 3 axis compass or barometric meter. So the only difference between the two, with the pn-30, you won't know your true compass reading while hanging in a tree upside down and whether or not you're about to get rained on. Other than that, they're supposedly the same with one exception, color.

The DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 improves on the PN-30 in these ways:

3-axis electronic compass, performs in any position, while in motion or standing still
Sensitive barometric altimeter for accurate altitude readings

Think that means there is no e-compass or altimeter.

I'm not sure the price is odd. You can currently find the pn-40 for $299 and just because it is "newer" doesn't necessarily mean it has better or even the same features as the 40. Since the designation is between the 20 and 40, that might imply a feature-set between as well, in-line with the price. But we shall see!

I noticed the pricing is lower than the PN-40 and one site had a release date of 6/21. Though that date might not mean much, but the lower price is odd compared to the PN-40.
