I agree with you that the outdated maps are frustrating, but Garmin buys their maps from Navteq or whoeever. And Navteq is the best out there. All GPS's will have old maps so I don't know what you expect you will find from anyone else.

I just bought a Garmin 260W. The first "test" I ran was on two addresses for neighborhoods built 3-5 years ago. My 260W was loaded with 2009 maps. Neither of the addresswa showed up on the maps. One address in the Seattle area did not even recognize the street. Anyone who is familiar with this city knows that there can be a 162nd St., Road or Place and then also NE or SW. You could be on the other side of town with the wrong entry. And I was forced to chose SW when I wanted NE. Garmin's website shows no updates available. I'm unimpressed with the map data provided and the Garmin is being returned. Great gadget useless maps.

If the update appears in that section after scanning your device, then the WebUpdater program thinks your device needs that update. The updater program can determine which chipset type is in each GPS, so if you see the update there, Garmin thinks your device needs that update.

One thing that is not apparent from "Additional Updates" is how to tell which version you have or whether you need it.

For example there is a "GPS Chipset Type M" update with no version or change history and no idea whether I need it for "my" nuvi 750 (or only others with different chip)
