Garmin Astro 220

The Garmin Astro is a unique product which gives you the ability to track your dog by GPS while hunting. The Astro resembles many of the other Garmin handheld devices but with the addition of a second antenna. In fact, it is really just a modification of the 60CSx. There is a secondary transmitter known as the DC-20 which is attached to your dog. Your dog’s position is then relayed to the Astro so you can see your dog’s position on the Garmin Astro screen.

Position reports come every five seconds and you can view a trace of where your dog has been on the Astro. The “Dog Tracker” will also give a compass heading and speed indication for your dog. Alarms can also be set to indicate when your dog is on point.

The DC20 transmitter can be attached via a neoprene harness strapped to the collar, or threaded to an existing one inch collar. The Garmin Astro battery should last about 20 hours and the collar will hold a charge for about 17 hours.

Have lots of dogs? Not to worry, the Astro can track up to five different DC 20 devices and thus five dogs. The range is about five miles in a best case scenario. The Garmin Astro also has the ability to set waypoints for where you found your prey and timestamps with a date, time, altitude, and location.

This product is due in June at a cost of $642.84.

  1. The garmin astro is a great product for people who want to spend the bucks for the latest in hunting technology. The only complaint I have seen is the bulky DC-20 harness mounted collar. I hear they are coming out with a new one soon that is better designed. Great site!

  3. I’m interested in getting this system but I’m curious as to the range I can track my dogs. Here on the big island (Hawaii) the forest gets pretty thick! The GPS still works fine but will I be able to pick up the dogs if they travel far. If anyone has experienced this I’d like to here your opinion.

  4. Garmin Astro 220 is only legal system I know of.
I understand you can get into serious trouble with Fed now days if you get caught using illegal stuff like from WMI or other beeping collar.

  5. Garmin Astro bundle is an excellent product for Search and Rescue and since you can download the maps afterward it makes it a tool for court when you catch the criminal or find a body. You can go directly back along the same route to the recovery site. I am a Master Trainer and Instructor/Handler for Bloodhounds and it works GREAT.
