  1. Tim, Here again…I just realized that the model I’ve been looking at is the Garmin nuvi 250W (not the 260 which I origianlly asked about) and I don’t see any comments about that one. Any insights or things to be aware of? Can I assume that the map is at least a 2008 since it doesn’t specify in the data about the model? thanks again

  2. The 250w is basically the same as the 260w except it doesn’t have Text To Speech. It will come with at least what Garmin calls the “2008″ map. The most recent map is “2009″ which is based on data released in 2007.

  4. It is presented at the time of download. If you didn’t copy it down then, you can go back to my.garmin.com and find it in the ‘MyMaps’ section.

  5. Just purchased a Garmin 250W, I immediately went to the Garmin site to download my FREE update to the 2009 Maps. Just a quick note, if you plan on doing the same, set aside plenty of time, even with high speed internet. The download itself took just over an hour, the actual decompression and install took an additional 90 minutes, at least. In addition, since I was using a laptop with Windows2000, I had to download the USB drivers. Be patient! Other than that the 250W is an absolute joy to have in the car. By default the “Unpaved Roads” option is turned on in the Avoidances menu. Since I live in the country, all roads are unpaved. So when I attempted to add Favorites, It always searched for the nearest paved road sending me on a wild goose chase.

  6. Just puchased a Garmin Nuvi 250W.Thrilled with the larger screen. The voice though is not as clear as in the older c530 I sold to a freind. I find the map image’s sharp & more defined in the 250w. This unit get’s you were you want to go, everytime. For the money this unit & any Garmin product are hand’s down the best on the market.

  7. I got the Garmin Nuvi 250W and was dissapointed. It took at least 20 min. everytime I turned it on to find the satellite signal. I traveled with it and tried different areas and still took as long. I took it back and am looking for a better gps to purchase.

  9. This unit is hands down the best bang for your buck, Although there is no TTS, it still gets the job done clearly and accurate. As an Audio/GPS salesman, I sell these Garmin Nuvi units with the confidence that the average user will have no problem at all using these devices. If reliability and simplicity is what you’re looking for, then Garmin is for you. An added note for the consumers as well.. The new Clamshell packaging (Plastic container opposed to the Standard cardboard box) comes with North America 2009 maps.

    • Hi,

I want to purchase a GPS when I travel. I would be a first time user of this product. I basically need it to find locations when I am driving around.

Can you recommend something simple, efficient and effective to me.

  11. I’m looking into purchasing this model. This is a splurge purchase, not a necessity. I’m looking for the basics. I for sure want voice guidance and widescreen, as this has. But what else is important. What would I need bluetooth or FM transmitter for? Can I use this if I am walking? Will it adapt if I get lost? Thanks.

  12. You can use it walking on streets, and it will automatically re-route if you miss a turn.

  13. In order to download my 2009 updates should I not need a USB for my nuvi 250W? It did not come with one when I purchased it a year ago.

  15. Just purchased a 250w. I thought the salesman told me that it updated maps automatically without me doing anything.
Have not driven with it on yet. Does the voice come on when I start moving?

  16. Rose, the maps do not update automatically. They have been released about once per year by Garmin and typically cost about $70. The voice only comes on when it has something to tell you, like “turn right in 500 feet”.

  17. My Garmin nuvi 200’s display is in Hebrew! I can’t even read it. How do I get it to display in English? The map and voice are English but not the display. It’s totally unreadable.

  18. I purchased a Nuvi 250W for my wife last Christmas and even with some small problems I like the unit. But now I am really upset, it seems that Garmin doesn’t have enough of my money, now every time I turn the unit on it is telling me that “my maps are a year old and that I should go to Garmin’s website and purchase new map updates”. Even worse I can’t find a way to turn off this message. I am in Germany on vacation right now and the last thing I need to do is mess with my GPS when I need it most. What are the people at Garmin doing? Don’t they know the best way to loose customers like me is to throw advertising at them after they have purchased their products?

Has anyone found a way to turn off this stupid message?

  19. I just recieved a 250w for Christmas this year and already love it. Although, I am wondering if anybody can help me to find a website other than Garmin to download extras for it. Also, I read something about Garmin and GoogleEarth. Am I able to put GoogleEarth on my 250w?

  20. Tom – See Back to English with Garmin.

Sonny – A (free) software update to the latest version will make it so you see that message way less often.

Andrew – No, there is no way to put Google Earth on your Nuvi. See our Garmin Nuvi Forums for more tips and to ask advanced questions.

  21. Tim,

    Great site!

I received a TomTom ONE 3rd for Christmas. The school zone and crosswalk audio warnings as well as the display showing the posted speed limit are great features, but was disappointed that the device could not plan an itinerary -as the salesperson had told my wife.

The TomTom died and was unrecoverable a few days later. After the 4th round with customer service and reading all the other issues with the devices I returned the TomTom.

Can the Garmin perform speed, school and crosswalk audio warnings? Is itinerary planning possible?

    Thanks

  23. I have had a Garmin Nuvi 250 since Christmas and have just got into the car today to find it has lost ALL my stored information and reverted to speaking German. I am unable to reset the language to English despite selecting it in the language settings menu. I have had no previous problems and did nothing different with it today than any other day. Anyone with any ideas?
