I just purchased the 255w. I originally purchased the 260w because I wanted the long battery life. I liked the 260 just fine. But there was an issue with the sale that caused me to return it to the store (they had mistakenly given me a used one). The store manager offered me the 255w at the same price as the 260w. I jumped on it. After reading all the comments in the “first impressions”, I was a bit worried about the sound so I listened to it in the store first. The voice is perfectly acceptable, although not as good as the 260. I agree that the Aussie gal is better. Most words are easily understood, but “boulevard” and a few others are not so good. The unit is much faster than the 260. The map shows my exact position even when traveling 60mph. The 260 was always a bit behind when going 35 or 40. I love the fact that the POI list updates itself when driving and shows direction to each item on the list (maybe they all do that – it’s my first one). The battery life is a little less than the 260 but 4hr is still good for me. With no experience like you other guys, I can make little comparison with other units. But I am certain that I am going to be satisfied with the 255w.
The Garmin website reports that the 255w has 1000 waypoints/favourites/locations. What exactly does that mean? Can you do multi-point trips with itineraries?
You can store 100 “favorites” on the device. For example if you frequently navigate to “1234 Main St”, you can save that under a custom name for faster recall. You cannot do multi-point trips/itineraries– you can only add one via point to the route.
Tim,
How does the nuvi 255W compares with the TomTom 130S. I got a 130S for Christmas and I like it very well but am concerned with the limited memory. The nuvi has the SD memory for expansion.
I love the 130S speech to text. Does the nuvi have this feature?
What is your personal preference?
Thanks
The Nuvi 255w does have text to speech. I generally don’t discuss my personal preferences because my navigation needs are likely much different from yours. I’d rather help you figure out what is the best device for you which could likely be different than the best one for me.
The biggest advantage of the 255w over the 130s is that the 255w has a widescreen. However TomTom has a similarly equipped XL 330s.
Thanks Tim – I thought there was something wonky with the way Garmin shows the feature on their website.
Much obliged.
the voices on my new 255W are scratchy above 50%. are their any updates available, or is that unit too new yet?
You can check for updates with Garmin’s WebUpdater program.
best value for a speech to text GPS – basic navigation needed – no MPE, voce recognition etc.
thanks
Can anyone summarize the differences between the 255w and 260w? 260 is available for $100 less. Is the 255 worth the difference?
Ignore my last question. I just discovered the comparison features and forums on the rest of the site.
I just bought the nuvi 255w mostly from the things I had saw on your website and I must say I’m very pleased with it. It is my first and feel like it was a substantial investment but we travel a lot in my wifes work and we were being sent to Washington DC. Bought it Baltimore and learned to use it in DC. I found it easy to go through the menus and program and hearing the street names called out and turn directions it was a welcome companion driving my wife back and forth to work. Good large screen easy to see but to be honest you don’t have to look at it that much. I think its great. And the concerns with the sound of the voices I think is unfounded I had no problem understanding every word. It never failed me while we were there and we were staying on Vermont Ave with the tall buildings surrounding us. I want to thank this site for there help to the consumers like me.
After using my 255W for about a month now, I am convinced that it was a good choice. The voice is at times hard to understand, but a glace at the upper info bar allows me to read the instruction that was just given (it stays there until I make the turn). Also, to the far left of the info bar is a large area that has an easy to see arrow telling me exactly the kind of turn that I am going to make (full turn, veer, etc). Plus, touching the arrow zooms the map to the next turn and causes the voice to repeat the instruction. This is my first GPS – it takes a little work to learn all the features, and then more work to avoid becoming addicted to the thing. I prefer setting the map to 2D instead of the default 3D. It seems faster and is more like looking at a paper map (comfort level). I love the auto zoom in/out as I approach and then complete turns. I just purchased Europe maps and am looking forward to my first GPS assisted trip.
This site is just incredible – thank you so much for the wonderful resource. My fiancee has just learned to drive and we’re moving to a new city – I’ve been breaking my neck going back and forth between the various devices, but with Amazon having basically the same price on the 255W and 260W, it SEEMS like the 255W is the best bet? I’ve read in the forums that the voices aren’t as good – but hey, I just want the thing to tell me where to go.
So to the question – I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a Jeep Wrangler, but they are VERY loud. I checked it the 255W out in a store and it seemed loud enough in there – at 8, the default volume – and obnoxious at 10 – but I wasn’t in my Jeep with the wind rustling the canvas top.
So do you think it will be loud enough?
Also, the primary reason for buying the GPS is to hopefully prevent my fiancee from getting into accidents. Are these things highly reliable in big cities – or are they always directing you on and off the highway, onto one-lane roads, etc. She’s likely to follow the stupid thing’s directions, whereas a seasoned driver would likely ignore it.
Thanks for any info – and do you have a link to click to give you credit at Amazon?
Oh, sorry – just to clarify – the city we’re moving to is Austin, TX – and my biggest fear is that the stupid thing might tell her to get off the expressway, then back on it again, off again, on again, tell her to go the wrong way down a one-way road, really idiotic stuff like that.
Are the Garmin maps and directions advanced to the point where they don’t do that anymore? In the store, they also didn’t seem to be very intuitive as far as relating the turn-by-turn directions ahead of time –
For instance, if you could notice that the GPS was telling you to take an offramp, then get back on via the next onramp – then you’d know it was being stupid. But if it’s dictating turn by turn – then even being a seasoned driver in an unknown city, I’d likely fall for it, thinking the device was correct.
Thanks again for all the wonderful information here.
Jack, I think I answered most of your questions in the forums, but if not drop me a reply over there and I’ll do my best to get you answers.
I just bought the 255w and a SD Card. I placed some photos on the card, along with two mp3 songs. Now how do I get the unit to reconize the card? Thanks
The 255w does not have an MP3 player. For photos, I suspect it might only look in the internal memory for photos and not on an SD card.
I recently purchased the 255w. I am considering returning it due to accuracy issues. On two occassions it has did not get us to the address that we entered. One occasion was our house, so I know where it is. The second occassion was a location on a military base. I am less concerned about the on-base location, but not being able to recognize our address did not improve my confidence in the unit. Am I expecting too much from a commercial, mid-range GPS unit? Even after sitting in my driveway to mark the location as our home it equated it to another address. Not a good sign in my mind.
I’d rather not tell anyone they are expecting too much…. I’d like to see address accuracy improved as well. Some areas are great, some not so much. But you don’t find any significant differences in any other GPS so you might return it and forget about GPS in general, but I wouldn’t return it to purchase a different GPS as you will have similar results.
Have had the Garmin 255W for several months and so far love it. Wanted to check if it will work in Hawaii or is it only contiguous U.S. coverage. Thanks
It does include Hawaii and Canada.
Tim: what about maps of europe? how do I get them installed.
[snip] what is your view on refurbished units
We have an article on Refurbished GPS Devices.
I am considering buying the 255W but want to use it as both a handheld – for quading in the bush – and in my car. Does anyone have advice for being able to use it for both functions
Eric, your best bet would be to look at something in the Garmin Nuvi 500 series, or consider getting a waterproof, rugged case for your 255w.
Which is the better purchase the 255W or the 350? Which one has the most up todate maps? Is garmin upgrading all new purchases? My husband is traveling to Colorado to hunt and I want an early Chrismas present for him. Both seem to have the same feature, but??
I’d go with the 255w as it has a newer interface, a widescreen display, and does come with the Garmin nuMaps Guarantee.
First of all, the 255W is a great unit, fast updates, fast lock in, great mapping ect ect…. however, I live in the country, and we have dead end roads. On two different occasions, the gps has told me to turn where there is no road instead of routing me around the block to get to the correct road. is it perhaps because the road is only maybe a 1/2 mile or so from the main road and the gps thinks that it goes all the way thru?
Do you recommend buying a case for a Garmin 255W. If so, which one and why? Also, do you recommend purchasing screen protectors for them. Thanks
I find the screen protectors unnecessary. If you frequently move the GPS around, a case can be handy but many people just leave them in the car.
Hey Tim, any thoughts on #25?
Hard to say since I don’t know where you were, what the route was, etc.
Hey tim,
want to know which one is better garmin 255w v/s maestro 4250? in terms of navigatios/maps/finding POI’s and user interface for a person using gps for the first time
They both use the same map vendor so they will have virtually identical maps and POIs. The Magellan interface isn’t too bad, although I personally prefer the Garmin interface. Each will have their own personal preference in that regard. The Nuvi 255w is certainly a good pick.
Does anyone know if the 255w is waas enabled?
Theres no option to turn it on/off.
A friend was at my place and he has the Nuvi 680 that offers the option to enable/disable waas and when it is enabled he can see it on the satellite screen that shows that the device locks on the satellite #51 (and that inside my house)
My 255w never sees sat #51.
I want to be sure that I am getting the best precision possible.
Luis, the 255 is not WAAS enabled. WAAS provides no benefits to auto GPS devices, and only serves to drain the battery faster.
I just bought 255W but I can’t find any option to display compass on the screen(e.g., N, NW, E, SE …).
More critically, whenever I try to save some locations or places by selecting the lists this GPS displays, this device stops working (like down in computer). I have to force to shutdown and restart–this makes me crazy.
Some places are ok but some places always make this GPS stop working (for example, west parking lot in Mall of America –> I can never save this place. In fact, in addition to this place, there are some places to make this GPS stop working NECESSARILY.
Is there anyone to experience this?
if anyone is interested in the first part of this question the 255w can be set to “track” north or north is always up. But in the default mode you can see which direction you are going by tapping the speed you are traveling and it will give you a whole host of info. one of which is the direction of travel (N, S, E, W, NE etc).
Dongchul – There is a known issue with the device crashing when saving certain favorites/POIs. Garmin says they are working on a fix.
Where do I find/buy the traffic charger receiver?
The part you are looking for is the Garmin GDB 55 MSN Direct Receiver which is just starting to become available.
/Tim
Thanks Tim. I did not know that issue.
Hopefully, this bug can be solved ASAP.
One more thing,
Is this not rare case that this GPS let us know the wrong (or inefficient)direction?
When I went to the grocery store I used to go frequently, this GPS let me know I have to go back for a long distance and then I have to come back again at that point through a highway in order to go to the grocery store I currently almost arrived. Besides this one, there were a few cases this let me know unappropriate or wrong direction I cannot understand for the last 4 days.
Probably all information in GPS cannot be accurate
. Even though I understand this fact, I realized that I cannot fully rest on the GPS.
GPS can be a just supplementary aid.
Correct, the GPS won’t always pick the same route you like, and sometimes mapping errors can make for route errors as well.
I bought a 255w last week. I’m used to computer equipment having CDs bundled but there weren’t any in the box. I thought software for connection to a Windows or Mac system would be included.
What are you looking to do with the GPS once it is connected? If you just want to run application updates you can download the software from garmin.com/webupdater
Download POIs and check the trip logs, stuff like that. I saw the Mac software, Roadtrip, and checked that out but wonder if there should have been a CD with all that stuff on it, or even a backup of the maps.
“should” as in was there something missing in the box? No. “should” as in it might be a good idea if Garmin include a CD with that software in the box. Perhaps.
Hi Tim,
Been reading lots of forums on 255W vs 260W. And lots of complaints about the “tinny” voice and low volume on the 255W. On the voice issue alone, is the 260W that much better and louder than the 255W? –thanks.
Sue, For people who have used they will notice a difference in sound quality. However people who have never used either will not likely think the sound of the Nuvi 255w is terrible. See this forum post “Garmin Nuvi 255W first impressions for more commentary.
I brought my 255W last night and I cannot find any information of batery operating life and if the battery can even be replaced? Can anyone help?
Approximately 4 hours, battery is not replaceable.
Thanks Tim…. Do you have any idea how long the operating life of the battery is then? If’s not a replaceable battery and it only last a short life cycle I might condsider exchanging it for a different model which you can replace the battery.
There are almost no portable auto GPS devices with replaceable batteries. It should last about 1,000 charge cycles according to Garmin which would probably make it last 5 years or so of average use. (My guess.)
Tim
Thank you for your assistance and information.
I’ve never owned a GPS before, and am contemplating the 255W. I will primarily use it in N. America, however, I would like the option of Europe maps. Is the 255W capable of downloading/storing Europe maps, and how much does that cost, or should I be looking at a different unit?
Thanks.
You can purchase Europe maps on SD card for about $150 MSRP. You can also purchase them on DVD and load them yourself for about the same price. There are devices that ship with both maps already included which is often cheaper, check out the Garmin Nuvi 770 for that option.
I couldn’t find this out anywhere on this site. Does the 255W have the capability to switch to other modes such as walking or bicycle, etc? The Garmin website has it indicated that it doesn’t, but I thought that all the Nuvi models had this option. I would appreciate a quick response. Thanks!
I bought 255W two weeks ago.
Can I update the map free on the website in the future?
If not, do we have to pay some money if we want to update map in the future?
How can we know if I am eligible for a free map update?
Thanks!
Lauren – Yes, if I recall correctly both walking and bicycle rules are options.
Dongchul – The answer is “it depends”. You can check what is available to you by registering the device at my.garmin.com
Tim,
For planning purposes I would like to turn the GPS off, change my ‘current location’ to somewhere else, and then pick a destination so that I can see how long it will take to get from point a to point b. Is this possible with the Nuvi 255W or any of the 2×5 series? Thanks in advance for your reply.
Rob – Yes, I call that feature Offset Routing. Many devices have that feature built in, but with most of the Nuvi devices you need to employ a little trick. See our article Offset Starting Locations for the instructions.
I just purchased a 255w, is there a good motorcycle mount for this unit as I would like to use it in my auto as well.
Tim:
Looking at the garmin website it states that the 255w is tts only in North American version. Does this means that it only has english tts voices,or that only the version that is sold in USA Canada has tts. If so does the US version has a Spanish TTS voice? Thanks in advance
Grandpa – Check out a company called RAM Mounts.
Cesar – As far as i know it just means that only those sold in North America come with TTS and you will be able to change the TTS language.
Just want to be subscribed to the 255w forum. Thanks.
I was wondering which Garmin is better the 260W or the 255W? I own the 260W now but I thought I would purchase the 255W if it had more updated information on it.
The 255w has a few new features, but it doesn’t have “updated” information like roads/pois.
I am looking at the Garmin Nuvi 250W and the 255W/
I am an inexperience user of gps systems. Which do you suggest and why
I just got my 255w this past week, and so far I’m very pleased! (My first GPS.) One question: does anyone know where to get a cable to direct-connect the device (which uses a mini-USB port for power) to the car’s fuse box (as opposed to using the cigarette lighter adapter)?
Sue- I’d got for the 255w with the new interface and optional traffic.
Garmin’s site say the expansion type is SD not microSD. Can someone verify this for me?
I am thinking about purchasing the 255w, but did I read that it does NOT tell you how far you have to your destination or the estimated time you will arrive? If not, what is a similar Garmin model with these features?
Bob, the 255w will give you the destination distance and estimated time of arrival. The destination distance might not be on the Map Screen, but you can access it by pressing the speed indicator.
how do I mannualy set the latitude longitude on my nuvi 255w?
Straight off the manual:
1. Touch Where to? > Coordinates
2. Touch a box to enter a coordinate.
3. Touch Format to change the type of coordinates. Because different maps and charts use different coordinate formats, the nüvi allows you to select the correct coordinate format for the type of map you are using.
4. Enter the coordinates, and touch Next.
How do I use US National Grid Coordinates with this unit?
Hi, I’m new to gps. I’m considering a 255W, but was wondering if I purchased one now, would it have the 2008 or earlier maps installed or would it be newer like 2009 map data? Thanks
Mike, it should come with the newer maps, but even if it didn’t the device would still qualify for the Garmin nuMaps Guarantee.
I have used the 200 and when you are driving the next street appears in the top geen bar. I bought a 255w and it simply shows the direction you are driving and the street. Can the 255w be set to show the Next street you are approching in the green bar at the top?
The Nuvi 200 will only do that if you are not following a route. If you have a destination plugged in it will show the next turn on the green bar.
I ordered a Garmin 255W and they told me I needed a memory card. Do I need that? What is the benefit?
Debbie (and everyone else) – You ABSOLUTELY need to read the following two pages and beware of the scam out there regarding this:
What maps should be included with new 255w
Do I Need an SD Card for my GPS?
It is a scam. Run the other way.
I just bought a 255W and I can’t figure out how to set up a trip that begins from my home, goes to several intermediate locations in maybe 2 different towns (my home is in the 3rd town) and then returns home. Is there a way to do this?
John, you cannot do that (in one trip) with the Nuvi 255w because it does not support Multi Destination Routing. You would have to step up to the Nuvi 700 series for that feature.
Can I make the multiple stops by entering the last one as the destination and then entering the intermediate stops as way points?
Yes, however you are limited to just one via point. So you can specify your destination, and then one point you want the route to go through, but not more than one. You also don’t get any indication of reaching that individual waypoint.
Hi Tim, there are many entries comparing 260w and 255w. But I’m still a little confused. I’ve had the 260w for a week, and I keep missing turns – either turn too early or too late. The 260w doesn’t know where exactly I am sometimes. Is 255w better than 260w in the position accuracy? I heard that 255w has the HOTFIX chip which makes the calculation faster than 260w. True?
I got the 260w on sale, but 255w is also on sale this week. The after sale price for 255w is $20 more than the 260w I paid for. But if the 255w is really more accurate, I’ll return the 260w and get the 255w.
Will the Tomtom 330s be more accurate (fast enough)? How about the TTS quality? Garmin has problems with ‘St’ and ‘Dr’. They are ‘Saint’ and ‘Doctor’ in Garmin. But I fixed them. Not a big deal. Sometimes the pronunciation of street names are funny, e.g. “Charles” is “Char-less”, though we can understand. I just wonder if the Tomtom’s TTS quality is similar or better. (I understand that they are all machines after all.)
Thanks.
Matt, in the majority of cases it doesn’t have anything to do with the position accuracy, rather something bogging down the processor or the underlying map not being quite accurate. If you’ve updated the application to the latest version I’d contact Garmin support for help.
I’m considering the 255w and the 750. It sounds like the 750 has multiple destination capability and slightly better voice. I understand the 255w has some feature upgrades. One I think I would appreciate is the turn indicator and distance in the display. I don’t care about photos, music or traffic. Are there other features that distinguish between these two for basic navigation?
I think you’ve got it, BJ.
Hi Tim,thanks. I decided to get a 255w and try. I’m not sure about the position accuracy yet (hope it’s more accurate), but the TTS speech quality is WAY better with 255w. No more “Doctor” and “Saint”, and “Charles Dr” is “Charles Drive”, not “CHAR-LESS DOCTOR” as in 260w. I also found that in 260w, “1A St” becomes “One-uh Saint”!!! 255w doesn’t have this problem. I could fix the “saint” (see http://www.gpsreview.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7824), but not “-uh” and “CHAR-LESS”! Just to many to be fixed!
The map and software versions are the newest on my 260w, as no more update is available after I registered it on Garmin.com. Don’t know what’s wrong with the 260w, but we won’t need to know. Just get a 255w instead. And I’ll return the 260w.
Tim,
Thanks for the response. I’m really leaning toward the 255w (see #84). My only hesitation is the multiple route capability on the 750. Just to clarify, on the 255w, can I program multiple destinations (as favorites or something), then select them sequentially on an extended trip, or do I have to enter each location sequentially and real time?
There isn’t any way to plug more than two destinations into a single route. You can save each destination as a favorite and navigate to them individually. Once you get to one you then tap through the menus to setup a new route to the second, etc.
Does the 255 or 255w show different routings (shortest, no tolls, etc.)? Also, does the 255 or 255W show the total distance to destination or just the time of arrival?
Yes, it has those route types. the distance to destination is also available, but just not in the primary map display.
I just purchased a 255 and have a question. If I was sitting in my house in Connection and I wanted to see a list or restaurants in, let’s say, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, how would I do that. When I go to points of interest, it gives me a list of restaurants in my town in Connecticut.
Its pretty simple.
In the Poi screen at the button use the NEAR button first before making your search.
Hi Tim. I have 1 more question. Does the 255w show speed limits? I’ve used the unit for a couple of days but I haven’t seen it show the speed limit yet. Does it show only on roads in the US? I’m in Canada.
It probably doesn’t have speed limit data of Canada.
I just want to add that it is probably a good thing that Canadian maps dont have speed limit info.
The box with the speed limit is quite big and takes considerable viewing area of the screen and on top of that its opaque, meaning that you cant see the map in the background.
Also it is permanent afaik and with no options to customize it like time length of display, transparent setting or to turn it off I prefer to not have it.
Thanks Tim and Luis. I never thought of the down side of having it!
I respectfully disagree. I find the speed limit info to be very valuable, and while it takes up space on the screen it never really blocks the route you need to follow.
How does the 255W perform in cold weather? With my previous GPS I had to take it indoors each night when the weather dropped below 32F. If I left it in the car the touch screen wouldn’t work.
Short term storage: -4° – 140°F (-20°C – 60°C)
Long Term Storage: 32° – 77°F (0°C – 25°C)
Operating Temperature: -4°F – 131°F
Hi,
I just bought a 255W. I am planning a trip to Europe soon, so i wonder if there is any way to load maps for navigation in Europe. Can i buy it from Garmin? Can i load it via SD card?
Paul
Yes, you can purchase maps on SD card from Garmin and just pop in the card.
Can you make the 255W repeat an instruction or give updated information. The Garmin I have for my laptop (18) would repeat the information if I hit the space bar and the Garmin 10 repeated the info if I hit a key on my PDA.
How often does Garmin update their maps? I have lived in this small town in Central Oregon for almost 11 years and the streets that were here when I moved here aren’t even on the maps. And, if I enter a location from Google maps, it doesn’t route me correctly because it does’t have the streets to get me directly there.
John, Garmin has historically purchased and made available map updates from the mapping company they use once per year. It looks like that is moving to once per quarter. But that doesn’t mean the map is 100% perfect at that time. It isn’t uncommon to find mapping errors.
Google Maps uses a different map vendor than Garmin uses. You may want to checkout some of the newer TomTom devices if you can find your streets there as TomTom and Google Maps use the same mapping company.
Patrick, if you tap the turn in button you will get repeated info.
Tim, Which TomTom would be equivalent with the 255W? This is my 1st experience with GPS devices.
The XL 330s and the GO 720 are the most similar.
The XL 330 is a little on the spendy side. Why the big price spread on the GO 720?
I think you will find some of those 720 offers are refurbs.
Tim, You are absolutely right. So both of these units are quite a bit more that I gave for my 255W. Can I download complete streets or neighborhoods from Google maps on my 255W? So, it would route me properly? I downloaded an address in Redmond, OR in a new part of town, but was routed there by going around the older part of town to get there. Bend & Redmond Oregon are going rapidly and I live near there and go there to shop, eat out, etc. No way will any map company stay “up-to-date” with their growth!!
No, the maps are limited to what came on the device or what Garmin makes available through updates.
I’m new to GPS and after a bit of research I think I’ll get a 255W. One question, I guess for any unit, if I take a trip from one destination to another, can I easily reverse the destination points to get back to where I started along the same route?
Keith, technically no, you can’t reverse a route. One way streets, turn restrictions, and divided highways are just a few of the reasons you can’t reverse a route. However in your example you would just create a new route to the original starting point– no problem.
Our house was just built this spring, and I am not sure the address is in all data bases yet. Some seem to have it, some don’t. We certainly are getting mail tho.
Will this be a problem when I get a GPS? I am considering the 255W.
Thanks!
John, so long as you know where your house it– it won’t be a problem. It can sometimes take several years for new roads to appear on a map.
I am thinking of buying the garmin 255w but Im so confused. there are so many GPS to choose from. i hear the 255w is good but I hear that the 250w is just as good. AAHH i dont know.
i want it to have the 4.3 screen, text to speech, POI, restaurents, malls, things like that. Any recommendations? I really could use the help.
Thanks
Sorry, also what does the “W” mean and what is the difference between “w” models and other models?
thanks agian
Jennifer, the “w” means widescreen. Between the 255w and the 250w I’d go with the 255w that has a newer interface and next turn arrow that are very handy.
I’m comparing the 205W and the 255W. Which one seems to have the best accuracy for directions. I’m concerned that the 255W may have more room for error (staying current) since it speaks the road names vs. just turn right in 100 feet. Any thoughts?
They both have the same routing software and the same underlying map database, so they will give identical directions. Both will stay current at the same rate.
Thanks for the quick response. For a first time user, and ease of use, which one would you recommend?
I’d go with the 255w at the top of this page.
Tim,
I live in Southern California and am always dealing with traffic issues and deciding which routes to take. I am considering the 255w but have not read anything about the optional traffic feature and its effectiveness. Do you know if it’s worth paying for the additional device? I.e., is it any better than just getting reports on the radio?
thanks
Elliot, check out our primer on Traffic. The data won’t likely be better than what you might get over the radio, but being able to automatically get it, automatically factor in the time of delay, and be constantly receiving updates can make it better. Overall there are not many people that think the traffic system is “fantastic”, but most people would say having it is slightly better than not having it.
Last 2 questions, Tim. Again regarding traffic, I’m assuming I don’t have to decide on the traffic adapter at the time I purchase the 255w. Correct? In summary, would you say, in your opinion, that for a portable in the $200-250 range, the Garmin 255w is the best choice considering all the questions and concerns you address here? Consumer Reports rates it the highest in that class.
Thanks again.
Regarding traffic- yes, you can add it later.
I generally try not to give blanket “this is the best” type statements about a device without understanding the full needs of a user and then determining what I think is the best for them. Since people have different needs the best GPS for you could be different than the best for someone else in the same price range.
With that said– it is hard to go wrong with the Nuvi 255w. For something to compare it against consider something like the TomTom 720, but you won’t likely be disappointed with the 255w.
I have a 255W and must say I have experinced no problems what so ever. It has worked fantasticaly on all trips I have taken. There is one thing though. I want to delet certain locations I have entered and retain others. However, this can’t be done. I have even tried deleting them with the aid of the computer; no luck. Question: is there a way to do this without deleting the entire listings: Thanks
I bought a Garmin 255 and really like it. However, it does one strange thins with the text to voice. I live in Connecticut and for a state route, such as route 8, the display shows “CT-8? but the voice announces “Court 8?. Doesn’t it know that the route is prefaced by the state name or is that not universal for all states? BTW, I have no problem with the voice, it is more than clear enough.
Considering the Nuvi 255w, but I can’t find any information about whether or not it provides ability show alternate routes (in case of traffic or accident) or to exclude a road/route in route calculation.
You can connection an optional subscription traffic service and get automatic rerouting. Otherwise you can set a “via” point in the route to specify one location you want the route to go through on the way to the destination, however you can’t tell it to specifically exclude a certain road.
My 255W touchscreen doesn’t to be functioning properly. When I type in the city name on the QWERTY screen, typing the “C”, I get a “V”..or typing in a “R”, I get a “T”. I have tried collaborating the GPS. Any suggestions on how to correct this?
Jimmy, are you actually getting those combinations you mentioned? I ask because I’ve heard of a few issues where people get letters that are not close to the ones they tapped. You might need to contact support or ask in our Nuvi forums for help.
Tim, yes I am actually getting those combinations. Some letters I tap work properly, but those ones I mentioned are coming out with those results mentioned above. It is odd. T is to the right of R and V is to the right of C.
255W. Just returned from a two week trip to Vancouver, B.C., Vancouver Island, Victoria, and Seattle/Tacoma area. Arrived in both Vancouver and Seattle at night, during rush hour…in the rain. Our new 255W was priceless. The only glitches occurred with very short streets and turns but it still got us to our destinations. I recommend it with no reservations. Voice quality is certainly adequate and it picks up satellites quickly. Have not had experience with others, but this one is great for our use. We’re going to buy a couple for Xmas presents too. Maybe it’s not quite 100%, but easily 98.
Ok..i am completly knew to all of this GPS stuff!! I am interested in buying one for my Hubby for Christmas, becuase neither of us are good at knowing roads, and how to navigate in cities, which causes a lot of arguments!! I am wondering which would be best for us at a price below $250?
I’m completly lost in what to do!
All I want is something really simple with voice commads and 2d or 3d map. That we can just put our destination in and it will get us there, also POI such as stores or resturants would be great too. Please Help me
Thanks!!
My six month old 260 was stolen last week, so I just purchased a 255W to replace it. Just posting so I can be on copy to updates. Tim, you do an outstanding job on these fora!
Jim – I’d contact Garmin support.
Jess – This 255w here would be a fine pick.
Duane – Thanks for the comments. You might be interested in also following our Garmin Nuvi Forums.
Does the Garmin 255w have a pedestrian mode like the 205? Can you use it on foot?
Yes.
Hi Tim. My friend has got his 255w for about 1 or 2 months, and suddenly the machine couldn’t load the map/the map was lost. The store exchanged a new one for him (but it’s 260w, not 255w cuz it’s out of stock!). Do you know if this map loss problem is common? I’ve had mine for 2 weeks, and I wonder if one day the same problem will happen to mine too. In that case, what should we do?
I suggested my friend not to keep the 260w. He might want to get a Tomtom instead. For similar functions and price level, which one would you recommend? 330s? 720?
A follow-up on #93-96: Garmin told me that they tested the speed limit function in Canada and they found that the mapping didn’t support speed limit display on most, if not all, Canadian highways. Like what you said in #96, I was disappointed because I do want that function. I wonder if this can be fixed in the future.
I’ve heard about that problem only once or twice before, so out of all the problems I do hear about it doesn’t seem common. Yes, the XL 330s and the 720 are the most similar.
I can’t decide whether to purchase the 255 or 255W. Anything special I should consider in making my decision? Can both units fit in a purse and be used while on foot?
I am considering the 255W for my 85-yr old mother. I’m wondering what else I should get with the unit…carrying case? a different mounting for car? (is what comes with it sufficient?) and do I need to buy a charging unit for the car or does a charger come with the unit? She drives a Ford Crown Victoria … I’m concerned about how to mount the unit in that car. Any ideas? Any accessory recommendations would be appreciated.
Dee,
I just got the 255w and I’m quite pleased with it. I was concerned about leaving a tell-tale ring on my windshield as an invite to a break-in, so I got the Garmin weighted dashboard thing (sorry, I can’t recall the real name). Anyway, it works fine and doesn’t move or slide around.
I also made an interesting discovery with the suction cup. I found I can mount the suction cup on one of the plexiglass covers (RPM gauge) in my instrument panel. I can see it fine, it’s out of sight, and it doesn’t block my view of anything important. I am very pleased about this.
As a result, I’ll mount the 255w with the suction cup in my car, but use the dash mount in my wife’s car, which does not have a compatible instrument panel.
I bought a 255w this afternoon for my husband’s birthday. I wanted to charge the unit before giving it to him so it will be ready to go as soon as he gets it. When I opened the box, I only saw a cigarette charger. I guess I will have to charge this in my car first then? Also, are there any other hardware that should’ve come with this GPS unit? Thanks in advance.
Correct, the Nuvi 255w only comes with a car charger. AC (home) adapters are available as an accessory.
Tim- have another question after reading your #77 posting re: SD card. Is an SD card something that I can see by looking at the GPS unit?- kind of like a memory card for a digital camera)? I ask this because I don’t think it came with the 255W I purchased yesterday.
I just bought a 255W and I’m planning a trip from Indiana to Virginia. It takes me through Ohio but I’d rather go through Kentucky. I know I can use a Via waypoint but how do I use the via waypoint but not put a specific address within Kentucky. I don’t want to get into Kentucky and have it direct me off the interstate to just have to get back on the interstate. Is this possible? Thank you for your help!
I am looking to purchase this particular unit for my grandmother as an Xmas present. I had one question. I know that just recently a major highway was built near her home and was wondering if there is a way to update the map from a computer in which it shows the new road. My Aunt has a GPS and this is one feature she wished she was able to do. It just shows her driving in space when she is on that particular highway.
Nate you can use the map overview mode to tap on a single point to use. But otherwise you can’t really enter a “fuzzy” location. Beware if you tap on an interstate to select the correct direction.
Krystin – Garmin offers map updates about once per year, typically based on data from the year prior. The current map is based on data from the second half of 2007. When new maps are available they can be purchased for about $70. You can’t add your own roads to the device.
can I take the 255w in the house and program destinations into it like I did with my older Garmin 2620? Thanks
i was looking at a 255w on the wally world web site and then went to c city to see it in person. the guy at ccity told me that the 255w was recalled and the new unit is 255wcc, which they had. is this true? if so what is the difference and what does the cc stand for. he said garmin recalled his 255w in june and replaced it with the 255wcc. and if so is wally world selling an outdated 255w? thanks
Ron – Yes, you can.
Keith – No, it is not true. The only difference beside the part number is the style of the box/packaging. That is the only difference. The 255w was not recalled.
with the optional traffic feature, is that something you have to pay a monthly subscription to?
Ryan – Yes.
how much is just the traffic feature monthy? is there a lifetime subscription and if so how much?
Hi Tim,
I read all the responses given by you… I think you are really doing a great job…. Appreciate that….
I am also looking for a good GPS…. probably 255W or 750/770…. I want to know from you what are the negatives of 255w and how we can minimize their effect..
thanks
subba
Sunny07 the 255w doesn’t have Multi Destination Routing but that won’t impact most people.
Hey Tim,
Looking at getting the 255w, though I notice the 650 is cheaper. When I compared via this website the only difference I notice is that the 650 has an MP3 player. Is there any other major differences?
Thanks
Jim, get the 255w instead of the 650. The 650 has been discontinued. The 255w includes an updated interface, a very useful next turn arrow, an integrated antenna, and a few other more subtle goodies.
Can I use my 255w to direct my driving, while it is charging via the cigarette lighter charger?
If yes, is there an option/setting I need to set to enable this?
Yes, you can charge and navigate at the same time. No, there is no setting you need to make, just plug in and go.
Similar to Jim, I am considering the 255w but have have seen the 760w with a lot more features (highly rated) for only a little more than the 255w. Is there a benefit to buying the newer model or should I go with the 760w because it’s a great price for the number of features? I don’t think we would use all of the features of the 760w.
I understand the only difference between 255w and 260w is waypoints. What does that mean? Also, concerned about voice sound. Which one would you recommend, it is for my ~75yr old parents.
Does the Nuvi 255W allow you to put in a specific avoidance (as opposed to general like not using highways)i.e. do not use SR 441 (since you just heard on radio there is an accident)??
If not, do you know of any units that do this?
Joanna, the 760w will allow you to do the route creation method talked about in posts 78 and 79. It also has Bluetooth and a traffic receiver. Otherwise the 255w has some subtle nice features such as a next turn arrow that I find very handy.
Linda, it simply means the number of “favorites” you can store. Basically setting up and address and call it “Mom” for quick recall. But there are other differences to. The 255w allows access to traffic services for example.
Kim – No, most of the Nuvi models don’t offer that function. Most of the TomTom models do however.
If I leave the 255w plugged into the car-charger at all times during use rather than run it off it’s internal battery, will this degrade or lessen the lifespan of the internal battery? Thanks.
my 255w always shows my speed as 2 or 3 miles per hour slower than my vehicle speedometer regardless of the vehicle I am using it in.
How does the device compute speed?
Wayne, that shouldn’t matter much.
Mike, see these threads in our forums:

Tim,
I am going to purchase the Garmin 255w for my son. Your input has been most valuable. As I look at all the websites and info, they all advertise additional accessories, Are there accessories that should be purchased to make it operate better or are needed for it to operate.
Thanks,
Lynne
Lynne, most people won’t likely need any accessories. The most popular are alternative mounts– but first check out the mount that comes with it as it might work fine for you.
Hi Tim,
Thank you for your reply. I just tried to order the Garmin 255W and actually placed my order. I received an e-mail saying I needed to call to confirm and they said that I needed to order a memory card because it doesn’t come with it and said something about the maps. Help! I am confused, doesn’t everything come with it and was this guy selling me a load of crap. I cancelled the order, but still want to get it. Thanks,Lynne
Lynne, let me guess… the store was in New York City and called techondigital or 86th street photo and video…. or perhaps they have already changed their name again this month. When the price looks too good to be true– it probably is. It is a scam. Check the reputation of the store before making a purchase from an unknown store.
Hello, Does the 255w have any roadside assist?
can you enter long. and lat. for destinations and directions. have need to be directed to locations with that format and no other information available. If the 255w will not do this do you know of any other unit that will. thanks this site is unbelievably helpful
I have got the new 255w from [snip, see comment policy] this afternoon. We went for a test drive and I have figured out that my GPS doesn’t have text to speech feature enabled. I am expecting that it would tell me “Take right at 500ft – 156th ave ne” but it still reads me “take right at 500ft. But 255w should have the first feature enabled.
I have also regsitered it online and donwloaded the latest software as well.
How to enable text to speech, is there any restriction depending on location. I am based out of Redmond, WA. If not, how to fix this problem.
Enable Text-to-Speech
Tim on my question about longitude and latitude..can you use them on the 360 the 360 is less expensive by some $60. I need to be able to enter longitude and latitude as my destination on some unit and get a route based on that from my point of origin. thanks again for the help.
Tim i just bought a 255W at [deleted, see comment policy] here in Canada. I wasn’t sure that this was the best choice but ater reading all the postings and your replies I’m sure now that this is the best unit for me with the features shown. Thanks for the excellent comments and input. BTW the unit I bought came in a special 2 car package which basically for $30 more gives you the bean bag mount, a second car charger , a USB cable and a hard case. It was a good special this week.
Thanks again for the help.
Hi Tim,
If price is not a factor on the following units, which device would have: the most features, newest chipset, newer/better interface, fewest bugs? 265WT, 255W, 750, 330s & GO 720?
One would think that purchasing a GPS would be much simpler.
Thanks!
The Garmin Nuvi 265WT and the TomTom GO 720.
Wow, thanks for the Uber quick response!
Now if you had to rank those units in decending order based on those factors, how would you rank them and what would be a brief reasoning?
I’ve been reading the reviews, comments, questions and forums for about a month now and I’m getting more confused.
Thanks again!
Does this crash anyones Nuvi 255w
Disconnect unit from computer

Then go back to Tools

select Slideshow
tap on a picture
select “+” until maximum image size is reached (not ‘image too large “)
tap Screen Shot button (at top right)
It crashes! (screen goes black unit closes down)
Tim, do you know if the 255w has the compatibly to accept Navionics chips or similar marine mapping chips? I like the features of the 255, however I’m trying to find a GPS that can be used for both auto and marine use. Any suggestions?
Joshua, the 255w doesn’t accept any third party maps that I know of. I’d try the Garmin Nuvi 500 Series instead which are waterproof and offer accessory marine maps.
I tried Simon Andrew’s problem (#184) on my nearly new 255W and it did not crash the unit.
Trying to decide between 255W and the 265WT any thoughts regarding maps, product etc
Hi Tim, if there is an opportunity that you can get 255W and 750 at the same price, which one will you go for? Thanks
Wayne Bickley
I have posted what I am doing on youtube. I have the latest software installed. The image is about 2MB
Should I send my 255W in for repair? Am I doing something wrong?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FD_p2qvMHYA&feature=channel_page
Hi, like Joy, I am trying to decide between the 255W and the 265WT. For around $25 bucks more I can get the 265WT. Is it worth it knowing I wont use the bluetooth phone compatability feature of it? Thanks, Bob
Oh my goodness!!! My head is spinning with all of these choices. I am looking at the GPS Nuvi 205W is the 255W or whatever that much better? I am ready to lose my mind. I just want a basic GPS, I don’t need anything “fancy”. PLEASE HELP!!!
Help! I received the Garmin 255w nuvi I got for my husband today. Decided to put in some addresses for him. Easy enough. But when I first turn it on, it says “Select City in Kansas, United States. So I change it to Massachusetts. Fine…..but when I so a simulation to Wakefield Massachustts……..it keeps starting me somewhere near Santa Fe. I don’t see where to change my starting place. Is ther some way to change this? Thank you!
Sorry, I meant Kansas. the starting point is from somewhere in Kansas. When I press cities…..they are all cities in Kansas.
I mean it starts me off somewhere in Kansas instead of my home in Mass.
Advise needed! I just opened my new nuvi 255W. After learning some of the functions, I noticed that the touchscreen has an inaccuracy. According to the Quick Start Manual, page 5, I should be able to touch the upper left corner to see the Next Turn page. When I touch the upper left corner, I see the Turn List page (also seen if I touch the upper right corner). Now, if I touch a little further down from the upper left corner, I think I’m seeing the Next Turn page; however, I only see the map; not seeing the text as shown in the figure. Hope that all made sense. Is this an expected problem? I don’t have a defective unit, do I? Thank you.
Follow-up: I tested my nuvi on the road, and now I can see the Next Turn page when touching the upper left corner. I guess I had to be in motion!
Tim– you are a gps for gps! Thanks for all your comments. QQ, are the buttons on the 255W larger? I want to get one for my dad (70 yrs) and he’s got big, carpenter fingers. Also, i figure the widescreen would be an easier read for him. But,if the buttons aren’t bigger I think it would be better to get the 255 and save $50.
Hello and Merry Christmas
I have a Garmin nuvi 255w. I haven’t used it yet as I just opened it this morning. I’m looking for some input regarding the nuvi 255w vs nuvi 760. Both are the same price.
Thank you in advance for the input
How do you clean fingerprints off the screen on 255w. Thanks!
Ok, I got my father a 255w for Christmas and I am trying to register it on the garmin website. It is telling me I need to connect it to the computer with a usb cable. How do I get a cable? Why do I need to do this? How to I connect the cable to the gps unit?
Linda, the 255W doesn’t come with a USB cable, but I found that the cable to my Canon camera works for the Garmin. If you have one…or know someone who does, use it. You’re not going to need it very often, so if you have to borrow, it won’t be much of an inconvenience.
Nora – Yes, the buttons are larger.
Chris – I’d got with the 760 because it has more features and a clearer speaker.
Linda – A tiny bit of water (very tiny) and a cloth should do the trick. The cable is a USB to mini USB cable. You can get one at most electronics stores if you don’t already have one from something like a digital camera.
Wayne & Tim: thanks for the tip on the usb cable.
I am happy with it’s performance so far but it had disappointed me few times by not giving me the right location and also the details of some of the locations are not getting listed in search as well. I have observed the similar problems while I was in California and also in Florida as well.
Do I need to download the latest maps or any other things from Garmin. Please advise. All I need is an upto date maps
Only about 5-20% of all known POIs will get listed on the device. As to the “right” location, the world isn’t nearly as well mapped as many people think. Mapping errors can sometimes be off by hundreds or thousands of feet.
Tim thanks for the quick reply–checked map page suggests it gives map info for the big island…do you know if it includes Oahu…also can not find much info on using the 255w for walking…I am a ardent walker and this would be one of my main reasons for getting the 255w..especially on my travels in nyc and other places…
I’m looking for my first GPS. Don’t really need one, but want a new toy. Would use in cars, RV, and motorcycles. I like the street name feature, so base level is out. Thinking about Garmin 255W or 750. I would appreciate your opinion.
If you will be using it on a motorcycle I’d look at something waterproof like the Zumo. With an open SD card slot on the Nuvi 200/700 series just a bit of moisture or dust inside the slot could trash the GPS. Or consider something like the Nuvi 500 series. which is waterproof.
Thanks to you Tim I picked up a 255W during boxing week. Great unit. Acquiring a satellite signal is fast. Text to speech is awesome. No problems with clarity or loudness of any of the voices. Downloaded a few new car icons from Garmin which was a snap. Very happy with my new toy. Thanks again Tim. Your a wealth of knowlegde.
I’m researching my FIRST GPS. Just read through this page. I think I want to buy the 255W but am also considering a similarly proced and featured TomTom. Any advice? Is Garmin better than TomTom. I’ve heard the map updates are better with TomTom. Is that true?? HELP! I REALLY only want to do this once. Thanks.
I wouldn’t say the map updates from TomTom are “better”. They do offer a way for users to make their own map corrections for some types of errors and share those changes with other users. They also (so far) offer map updates more frequently than Garmin does.
I just attempted to order a 255W from an internet store (factroy sealed etc.) and was told that I would need a memory card (sold separately). Of course I didn’t need to buy it from them but it is necessary to do a whole host of things including map updates. Without it I’d have to send it to Garmin & pay for the updates so in the long run I’d save time & money. This is my first experience with a gps unit so I was unsure if it was a sales tactic or not. Most of the consumer reviews say that they work right out of the box and the Garmin website would lead me to believe that I can download the first update (2009) for free (nothing about needing a memory card). Should I bite the hook and get one with it or pass?
It is a scam, and one we (unfortunately) here way too much about. Let me guess, the store has an address is in NYC and goes by the name techondigital or 86th street photo & video. (Or perhaps they have already changed their name this month.)
I’m trying to figure out if there’s an acceptable workaround for the lack of long distance multi point routing on the 255W. 1. I understand I can add one waypoint in a trip. For instance, if I was travelling from Minneapolis to Atlanta and wanted to avoid Chicago I could start in Minneapolis, end in Atlanta and put in a waypoint like Paducah Kentucky, would I be routed all the way through? 2. If I created a Google map or Mapquest map of a trip from Minneapolis to Atlanta and routed it on my desktop the way I wanted it and then downloaded the entire trip to the 255w, would that work? 3. Do I have to create a series of shorter trips such as Mpls to Bloomington IL, Bloomington Il to Paducah Ky, Paducah to Nashville and so on? 4. If I’m combining legs of a longer trip, can I just touch the GPS map of the town so the GPS steers me there or do I have actually enter in a street address of something near that waypoint?
I understand from reading comments on the site the 255W has some more up-to-date features I think we’d use compared to multi point units such as the 750 which might be more dated. We’re trying to keep the cost below $250 so going up the price and option ladder isn’t desired. Thanks for any insight you users have and Tim, I don’t know who you are or what you do, but there’s more information on your site then anywhere else.
Tony, the 255w doesn’t support that type of function. You are correct in that you could just setup individual locations and navigate to them one at a time– that just won’t give you the “big picture”. The 700, 800, and 5000 series devices do support that feature. They also support the ability to create a route in MapQuest and download it directly to the GPS. Depending on the other features you might have been looking for, you might consider the Garmin Nuvi 750 which is currently just under $200 at a few places (see that link).
Tim, thanks for your comments. I’m trying to reconfirm a couple of your points: 1. The 255W is not mapquest/google map capable but the 750 is? The Amazon site for the 255W talks about downloading Mapquest/Google maps so I’m a little confused.
2.The 255W won’t let me route from Minneapolis to Atlanta with a waypoint somewhere in between?
Correct, the 255w is not compatible with the ’send route’ function of MapQuest. Both MapQuest and Google Maps have a ’send to GPS’ function, but that only sends the destination location as a single point/favorite…. it doesn’t send the route. For that you need MapQuest and the Nuvi 700 series or higher.
If the 255w doesn’t give you the desired route from Minneapolis to Atlanta you can add a Via Point, but you can’t create/save a route.
GREAT PRODUCT
Tim
Thanks for your advice. We’ve ordered the 750 based on your advice plus several other users who tell us they wish they had the multi point destination feature on their unit. I guess I’ll be sliding over to the Nuvi 750 forum next.
What is the difference between the Nuvi 255w and the 285w? They are both selling for the same price and all the specifications I found are EXACTLY the same. Also, I was reading through the comments and saw that you suggested the 760 over the 255w, but right now the 760 is an outlet item at bestbuy and is actually cheaper. Why would the item with more features be sold for less?
Where do you see a 285?
I found the 285w at bestbuy.com
Thank you for replying so quick. I don’t mind if the model is slightly older as long as the features are better. Just so you know, I just ordered the 760 and I would like to thank you for the helpful information from this site.
Kaley, I’ve done quite a bit of research between the 255W and the 750/760 line. Tim (the moderator) may correct me but I believe the 760 is a slightly older model. Garmin has released, in the past few months, an updated version of called the 765. As you know, the 760 has considerably more features than the 255W but has a slightly older interface which might explain its suddenly more affordable price. I asked the same questions you did and opted to go with a 750 (doesn’t have the cell phone feature that the 760 does) because the 7XX series allowed for multiple destination routing which is a big deal to me. The reduction in price for the 750 (and the 760) brought these units more into my price range.
I haven’t done any looking at the 285W so I can’t help you there.
I have a very basic question, Does the Nuvi 255 show the posted speed limit on your driving route? Do you have to turn an option on or is it automatic? I would love to know this before i make a purchase
Cory – yes the 255W indicates the posted speed limit. Only exceptions are, as you’d guess, construction zones or the like.
Is there some way to enter destinations on your home computer first(with some kind of software/website), then transfer these destinations to your 255W so you don’t have to enter them while in the car or driving. My job requires my visiting up to 15 locations a day in as many as four cities. Thanks for your help! Lindsay
Yes, if you have the Garmin Communicator Plugin installed (garmin.com/products/communicator/) then you can search for locations from within Google Maps and send those destinations to your GPS where they will appear in your list of favorites.
I have two questions:
1) Do all the Garmin units have the same number of points of interest? I see some list 6,000,000 but if they don’t list that then they don’t specify.
2) I tried a Garmin unit for the first time tonight and I was using the search for point of interest feature to find a particular store that was about 40 miles away. The unit gave me a short list of about 10-15 places up to about 15 miles away and then stopped. Don’t they all give you a list that you can scroll down and find things farther and farther? I used the GPS feature on my Verizon phone and it did that as far out as you wanted to scroll.
1) Generally, yes. About six million.
2) You can use the “near” button to search for POIs that are in a different location than your current location.
Tim:
Thanks for all of the information. I am also considering the 260 and the 255W. Do you recommend one over the other at this time?
I’d take the 255w over the 260 due to the widescreen.
After you create a route, you can add Via points. I have added more than one and it works. It will take you through the Via Points in order of proximity to your start. The quickest way to do this is have some Favorites saved to use as your via points.
Another big feature on the 255 compared to earlier 2XX models is the trip log. This is the Blue line you see following where you have been. You can play with this easily by dragging your current.gpx file into Google Earth. (Connect your nuvi to your computer and you will see this file.) You will see all your Favorites, and the trip log (track log) on the map. It will keep your mileage, date, time and altitude/elevation. Click on segments on the left side of G.E. to see the details.
You can create a track in other mapping programs, like Google Earth, and combine them with your current.gpx file so that you will have a blue line to follow, for trips that might not route correctly.
When you take photos on your trip, use the trip log to geotag them for location. On the link, there is a tutorial I wrote on how to do these things.
Happy Trails
Steve,
I have recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 255W and have a couple of questions regarding your short article in GPS Review.net you wrote January 24, 2009 Item #221.
I am still becoming acquainted with the product and have not yet taken it on the road.
My first question regards transferring the current.gpx file to Google Earth. I am sometimes confused as to where programs need to be placed when a general reference is made to copping a file to another software package. Secondly do I copy this file or move the original?
I have not yet tried adding more than one via to a route, but have been told this will not work for more than one via. I am looking forward to trying this.
My second question is, could you expand your information regarding this portion, third paragraph, of the article, “create a track in other mapping programs, like Google Earth, and combine them with your current.gpx file so that you will have a blue line to follow”.
Regarding taking photos, I didn’t see the tutorial you spoke of.
Regards,
Don Rice
I have had the 255W for a few months now. I does everything it’s supposed to do w/ no problems. I use it as a substitute school bus driver and it has saved my @$$ more than once. BIG screen, intelligable audio at full volumn (and I definitely NEED that)and accurate maps (except for the absolutely NEWEST developements of course, but then GoogleEarth, MSEarth don’t have them either), fast map loads and SAT locates and it’s CHEAP (relatively). For those that need an easily viewable, FAST real-time GPS this works pretty D@MN good.
Have gotten tons of help from your site and have boiled it down to either the 260W or the 255W and am trying to save as much $ as I can. I’ve done the comparison on this site and they look identical. What amm I not getting if I go for the cheaper 260W. Thanks
The 260w has a slightly longer battery life. The 255w can store more favorites, is compatible with traffic systems, has a speed limit indicator, has the Where am I? feature, a QWERTY keyboard option, and a few other small differences.
Hello this is my first GPS unitmy wife got it for me on my b-day I am now 63 the unit is a Garmin 255W the reason she got it for me is that I am going from Wisconsin to AZ. in June and I am DUM when it comes to a GPS what I want to know will the unit change to a new State when I drive into it or will I have to change the unit by hand when I drive into a driffrent state to that state, and will it also give me rest areas and gas stations around were I will be in that other state—-see I told you I know nothing about a GPS and also I will be driveing by myself.
Thank You For Your Time—-Fuzzy—-02-09-2009
You don’t have to do anything when you drive into a different state. It will adjust automatically.
Is there anything wrong with buying a refurbished GPS system? I’m looking at the 255w to take on a road trip from NC to CA.
See : Refurbished GPS Devices
does Garmin provide a compimentary map update to current maps when a new unit is purhased and registered with them
Lorne : Yes, see : Garmin nuMaps Guarantee.
Have been looking at the garmin 255w at online stores and am wondering if the included maps are up to date or will I need to purchase an updated mapset. One vendor wanted to sell me an update and said that all garmins are shipped with 2007 or 2008 maps, but I needed to purchase 2009 maps to be current. Is this fact or fiction?
Thanks
Tom, it is a scam… Run very fast from that vendor. I bet I even know who they are.
See Do I Need an SD Card for my GPS? and Garmin nuMaps Guarantee for the truth. By the way, if you don’t take their “upgrades” at that vendor then the device will suddenly be on backorder and will never ship to you.
Had my 255w for 2 months and its great. Used it on vacation after flying into a new location and it saved so much time. I did find some new road changes made in the area last year were not on and we made 1 wrong turn but that will happen.
Not sure it was worth paying $240 compared to the $100 ones though but Oh Well……
I like my 255W.
Im living in Ny NYC/Long island area. Im interested in the 255w. I dont understand how the traffic works. I have to buy something else?? Theres no way for me to add it?? And does anyone know how accurate it is here?
Thanks
Hello, comparing between the 255w and 760, and I want to buy a gps.
It is the oldest 760 (September 2007 approx.) But has more functions.
But the newest 255w (April 2008) is the fastest processor and the recruitment of signal.
I recommend buying (not the Bluetooth impresindible or mp3)
Thanks
Tim, I find that the 255w does not let me take the route that I want to, such as I want to take the toll road and it directs me to tkae the Freeway, do you know how I can by pass this so that it shows the route that i want it to?
Anita
See : Adding a Via Point: Garmin.
Tim,
Is there a way to tell when the 255w was first locked onto a satellite, or how many hours it has been used?
I just bought one and suspect it has been used before.
Thanks
Mike
Tim,
Is there a way to tell when the 255 first locked on to a satellite? Or to tell how many hours the unit has been used? I just bought one, and think it has been used before.
Thanks
Yes, Mike there is– When you register your device at my.garmin.com it will show the first acquisition date.
Hi Tim… WOW! You do a great job of answering all of these questions….think I have read every one of them, as I am wanting to purchase a GPS tomorrow. I was set on the nuvi 255 and then today, I ran across a nuvi 265 wt, at what i thought, was a great price. I noticed it has the directional turn arrow, and the zoom in/out both on the right side, plus traffic detail w/out having to do a subscription. How do you feel they compare and if they were roughly the same price, which would you steer towards? (no pun intended
! )
Really the only other difference is the 265WT also has Bluetooth. If they are a similar price I’d go for the 265WT given its more flexible traffic options.
I bought a 255w yesterday. Do I need to go to my.garmin.com to upload the latest maps ( or anything else) or is the unit up to date. I don’t like the speaker distortion at 80% or greater otherwise a great unit.
You need to go there to check if any updates are available for your device and it (along with the WebUpdater program) will tell you if your device needs any updates.
Tim, was looking at buying a 255w or maybe a 760. also thinking of the 265wt seems the 255 and 265 have newer features. whats the best one for the price? do you know if theses units save your were-to when say you turn them off? reading some of the posts here don’t look like there is a on-off switch ? any help on helping choose a gps would be great. thanks alot for any help anyone can give
If you set a destination, turn the GPS, and turn it back on later it will still have the destination saved.
Tim, Thanks for thequick reply. i know by reading your answers to questions here you don’t like to give advise on preferances but in your opion if say you were gonna buy one would you go for the 265wt 255w or maybe the 760? my main concerns i guess is that the older 760 doesn’t have the new updated features like hotfix, photonav, auto time zone, and the faster processer. as the 255 or 265 correct? don’t know anyway thanks for your help
The 760 does have hotfix when you use the (free) WebUpdater program to update to the latest application version. It is also relatively fast. The 760 would give you the most routing options/features of the devices listed as it can save routes and can perform multi-destination routing.
Tim, thanks for your help in answering my questions . i did end up buying the nuvi760 but had a question about it . the box says it comes with the fm traffic/vehicle power cable. i am asuming this cable is both in one? charger and reciver for the traffic reciving? or is there a different cord for that? this unit came with a 3 month free script. but not in a area that i really need to subcribe to it but would be nice when i go see the folks in las vegas i guess. anyway thanks for your help sure i’ll be asking more questions again so thanks great Q&A board here!
Tim,
I called Garmin and they said that the 760 doesn’t have hotfix. Even if you update it with the latest software.
So are you correct or is the tech support rep. I was talking to correct. I am betting on you, but thought I would double check.
Mike
Hi, has anyone noticed how the text-to-speech module pronounce address abbreviations? For example, it pronounces ‘St’ (for street) as ’saint’ and Dr (for Drive) as ‘Doctor’.
I’ve been in touch with Tech support but so far all they’ve been able to recommend is to run webupdate. I’ve done that and the problem is still there.
Any solutions?
Ken
If you search for the word “doctor” just on this page you will see several references, as well as a work-around in comment #86.
Thank you Tim, and TurboCCC as well, for their voice editor/patch software. That worked very well, indeed.
Ken
Tim, I’ve noticed that the 255W uses the mini-USB plug to connect to a computer and while it’s connected, the USB cable also provides 5V power to recharge the 255W. That leads me to wonder if a mini-USB cell-phone AC adapter/recharger will also recharge the 255W safely or not. If so, this means that when I travel I only need to bring one AC adapter/recharger for both cell and gps unit. Any thoughts?
Some will work, but many will just put the GPS into USB Mode as the Garmin is trained to look for its own chargers.
I bought a 255W in December and took my first trip with it today. The TTS doesn’t seem to work. It says “go 200 feet and turn left” but doesn’t give the name of the street. Do I need to activate the TTS or is this unit defective?
Jeff, see comments #177 & #178 above.
You know, I read the first 100 or so messages on this thread – obviously I should have read them all. I did the change and will test it today. I also went back to the user manual and all it says about this is about changing the language, not about activating TTS. Clearly the manual needs improvement. Thank you so much for providing this service.
Tim, well thanks for all your help with questions here, got another one or few to ask. when’t to check on garmin website to check to see if my nuvi760 is up todate on maps i checked my nuvi and shows loaded with north american nt 2009 think this is the same version im d/l from garmin it is saving to desktop but im guessin don’t need to update my nuvi if it has this version right? also how offen should you update maps? when i registered this unit it told me i only have 61 days of free map updates. thought you buy the units and get free updates. also had asked about updating the hotfix tried using updater but still can’t figure it out . well guess it is all about tring things but sure don’t want to do the wrong thing and mess the thing up thanks for your help and fast replys when i write Mark
I bought the nuvi 255w last month and also purchased the garmin dashboard mount. when i went to push the device onto the mount much to my horror I cracked the screen! I wasn’t pushing that hard. Is this common and can it be repaired or do I have to purchase another? I really liked this one.
does this model have europe maps????? pls advise
Hello, I am a first time buyer of a GPS, and am stuck between the 255w and the 750. From what I have read the 255w is the way to go, but the option I like on the 750 is the multi routing. The bluetooth and mps is nothing I need, I just want to get where I need to go. I am going to be driving to Vegas from California and searching for wedding chapels, so I need to make sure I get the correct directions. Is the 255w a better option over the 750?
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
I hope this hasn’t been asked before. If so I didn’t see it.
I’d like to know how well a device like the 255w will work mounted lower in the car like on the center console rather than on the dash. Does it have to be dash/windshield mounted to work properly? Thanks in advance.
Yes, I have a 255W and it gets very good signals anywhere in my cars. I have it mounted low at the bottom of my dash. You can press the signal bars and see how many satellites are received and their strength.
I’m trying to decide between the Nuvi 255W and the upcoming 1350. This will be for basic navigation. Any opinions? Any idea if the TTS is improved on the 1350? Thanks.
I have a Garmin 255W. It was purchased in November 2008. How and where do I find map updates for my GPS.
That would be Canadian Maps updates.
How does the Nuvi 760 compare to the Nuvi 255W. I can get either one for about the same price on-line.
I want to purchase a GPS as I travel all over the country. I was looking at the 265WT until I found a review commenting on the pop ups that occur with the traffic option. Can this be turned off or is there another model with all the same features but this? I hate spam and solicitor calls so would find the pop ups highly annoying.
Thanks,
Pam
You can’t turn off the advertising– that is how it is free. But most people don’t find them very annoying and they are not very frequent.
I will be travelling to Tuscany in June and to the Costa del Sol, Spain in September. I am thinking of the 255w & the Tomtom 330s. I understand that the 255w has European maps loadable though a SD card while the 330s does not have SD capability and requires saving the loaded maps and later reloading them.
I want to have European travel readily available. It appears the 255w has an edge. What do you think? I welcome any response. Alan
Either would work, but the SD card method is probably more convenient.
TimL would the garmin 370 be a better solution as it has the european maps already downloaded? Does it have an advantage over the 255w and does it have text to speech. Thanks. Alan.
Currently have 250W, and was thinking of replacing with 255W
1. maps need updating anyway,
2. 255W is way faster, and has Qwerty k/b. + more.
But, I “explore” the back roads a lot, and I use my nuvi mostly in a “Where the heck am I now?” mode, rather than “Get me from here to there”. As long as I can see alternate roads around me (zooming in/out), that is fine.
My 250W shows in the main display my compass bearing, N, W, SW, etc. This feature does not seem to be there on the 255W, although I understand you can get it by going into another screen (Speed?)
I really want this in my main NAV window, without having to change screens. Is this a configurable item?
Or, if not doable, is there any chance Garmin can be persuaded to PLEASE put the feature BACK IN!
Thanks in advance
On the map screen, the lower right shows the direction, unless you are on a GoTo route, then it shows arrival time.
Also, the Trip screen (by touching the lower left displayed speed) shows the direction. If you use regularly use a compass, you will be better served to get a mechanical one.
The 255W is very much worth the upgrade. It shows your track, so you can always use this to get back out the way you came into an area.
Hi Tim, I have a garmin 255w. I live in Canada. When I navigate to an address, in the US or Can. the unit is off by about 500m. Any suggestions? I went to the website to update the unit when I purchased it. Thanks, mike.
Mike, see this thread on GPS Street Address Accuracy.
Tim, I plan to travel around the Italian countryside with my 255w. Do I need the Garmin map of Italy, or for $50 more will I get the same coverage of Italy with the SD card that has all of Western Europe and be able to use it for other trips to other countries? Thanks.
I just bought a 255W and their is not a detailed instruction manual in the box. Did it just get left out or can I get a manual online somewhere? Thanks.
We’ve linked to the manual in the top left column of this page.
http://www.garmin.com/manuals/2675_OwnersManual.pdf
Thanks. One more question. Does the 255W show you which lane you need to be in on major freeways in big cities so you don’t miss your exit? I know some I’ve seen have this.
No, the 255w does not have lane guidance.
Hi Tim am thinking of buying a GPS looking at the 255w or even the 750. Question is this we want to use the GPS for a trip to Banff Alberta Canada pluse several other places like Waterton Park/Glacier Park/Yellowstone etc, we live in Kansas. Can I have the GPS map the whole trip or do I need to break it down into each day segments, starting each day with a new starting point and ending point?
Bob: You can map the whole trip at once, provided you are happy with the route it picks.
Tim thanks for your reply it was a lot of help, one other question in dealing with the 255w. The vehicle we will be using is a 2006 Jeep Liberty that has virtually no dash what mount would you suggest and am I correct in thinking that it (the 255w) needs a clear line of sight like the windshield.
Bob
Reception is good enough in GPS devices these days that you won’t likely need to mount it on the windshield. Many people use vent mounts or cup holder mounts that work just fine. I’d try the included mount first and if that doesn’t work out then you can switch.
Hi Tim thanks once more for your help and info I just bought a 255wt from a well know box store and paid the same as I would have had I bought the 255w. The vent mount was perfect, have not tried the unit yet but will in the comibng days after I read the manual that I down loaded from Garmin. Once more you were a lot of help.
Bob
Tim new concern what does 255wt mean, I can’t seem to find it listed in the Garmin site. My thought was it stood for FM traffic. However in checking the web it appears this is for europe, did I make a mistake?
Bob
Tim need help wife is giving me grief about wt, she thinks I bought wrong one, and need to take it back, I told I was sure it was ok, I hope so. We were going to buy the 255w I told here the t is an added feature but she does not believe me.
Bob
Tim,I have had the 755W for several months and I find it indispesable in locating address. It has never failed to find the correct location. My question is: is there any way to delete a single “Recently Found” Item, rather than the entire folder? I have a few I would like to retain, but remove the others. Thanks for your assistance.
Lonny: No, it is all or nothing.
Tim still looking for answer to question.
when the box says Garmin 255wt what does the wt stand for, I bought one today and wonder if I should return it. Because I can not find it listed on the Garmin web site. Was bought at well known electronics box store.
Bob
Tim, i know this is a forum for 255’s but hope you can help me here. i bought a nuvi 760 works great but have a question. when you set a destanation and arive to it it somehow always comes up with 500 ft to go so it doesn’t tell you that you have arived? is there some sort of calibration that can be done or is it just the way it is? i have my home set in and it seems to have my address as down the street from where i live thanks for any help you can give Mark
Mark, 500 feet is very close. See my reply to a similar question on the GPS Street Address Accuracy thread in our forums.
Tim, Thanks for the quick reply! well what your saying make total sence. i thought about this before and after i wrote you but, thought i would ask. new to this whole gps stuff and the 760 works great for me. using it today to run around the small town i live in to just play with it really was close sometimes closer than others but , guess you’d have to be blind not to see where your at.thanks for replying i know from all the people who write in keeps you quite busy . thanks for being here for all of us asking questions
Tim why are you not answering my question regard the 255wt, and what does the wt mean?
Bob
Bob… you can’t be serious. You asked the question at 4:41 yesterday afternoon. Asked the SAME question again at 5:34, then said “still looking for an answer” at 8:42 pm, and now at 10:50 the next morning asked “why are you not answering my question”. I occasionally need to step away from the keyboard do things like eat, sleep, road test devices, write articles, and there are hundreds of other questions here from other people that don’t demand a response within minutes. I don’t guarantee a response to any question. Sorry for being so acerbic and not answering your question within your time expectations. I’d suggest you call 1-800-525-6726 and ask Garmin Support your question if I’m not meeting your expectations.
Tim I am sorry that I was so pushy and not understanding please accept my sincere apology. I did try Garmin support and was on hold for an hour no one ever did answer, so I sort of got frustrated, plus the store where I bought it didn’t seem to have an answer and told me I had a limited time to return it for a full refund. That is why I went to you because I was sure you could help. Once more please accept my apology.
Bob
Thanks for a great forum… lots of useful info.
Here’s some info that I’ve discovered that may help other users of the 255W (FYI: My unit has Software Version 3.10, GPS SW Version: 2.38b)
1) Multiple via points can be added to route thru different places. Don’t know what the upper limit is, but I’ve added 5 vias to the final destination, and it works fine. Just set the destination first, then add each additional point as a via point.
2) Waypoints, Pictures, and POIs can all be added using the SD Card. What’s important is to set up the directory structure properly on the card: at the root, create a folder called “Garmin”; then within Garmin, create 3 additional folders: GPX, poi,JPEG.
Place the appropriate file types in their respective folders, turn on the unit, then insert the SD Card.
a) Waypoints within the SD GPX file will automatically be added or updated to the GPS, so removing the card won’t matter.
b) JPEG images will display when the SD Card, but do not transfer. If you are going to select an image as your ‘power-up’ images, suggest you copy that image to the unit itself (in the Garmin:JPEG folder) using a USB cable to your computer.
c) POIs will give you the option to transfer to the GPS when you insert the SD card.
I’m also working on a Waypoint editor that will enable easy addition of address info to the waypoints using your computer. This is especially useful if you have the Mapsource software and do planning with that. Mapsource does not currently provide entry into address or phone fields so they show on the 255W.
Have Fun!
Hi Tim;
I’m planning to surprise my husband with a GPS for his birthday (as he gets lost if in a new area and I’m not with him to navigate from a map). A GPS that has clear speech, is easy to read, and has an alert tone when it’s time to turn would be wonderful. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Lynn
I have a brand new 255W, and I am having an issue with Custom_POIs. I have been using a 250w and have about a dozen POI Groups in \Extras\ that have worked like a charm.
When I run those same groups on the 255w, I do not get all the address info for a site displaying after selecting one from a list. Instead, I get just the name again, and a big green \GO\ button, and a selection button at the bottom for \MORE\ (Info).
When I do select \MORE\, the address info is presented as one long line, not multiple lines of address as before.
It happens with groups I created myself, and with others, so not just me.
I have done a fresh POILoader upload (I had originally simply moved the SD card over).
I haver tried using GPX instead of CSV.
I have deleted all, then re-installed to the nuvi, instead of the SD card.
None work properly. One thing I did notice, is that the only group to display properly is one which has just 3 columns, not 4 (Long., Lat., Name, Address)
When I got the 255w home, the 1st thing I did was update from 4.60 to 5.00, and install latest 2010 maps (getting ready for a trip).
Has Garmin changed the way they process 3 or 4 columns? Is this a bug introduced with 5.00?
Is it just me?
I should add that the nuvi’s own POIs display just fine, with multiple lines for the address, and not even a \MORE\ button at the bottom, as it’s not needed.
It seems the 2×5 series requires extra button selections to accomplish the same thing as the 2×0 – even the \Extras\ are an extra scroll down after hitting \Where To\ compared to the old where \Extras\ appeared on the 1st panel
Thanks in advance.
Does anyone know if Garmin (N.A.) email support site actually works?
If I submit a Q. via Firefox, I get absolutely no indication that my request has actually been submitted, and when I use IE, (after filling out all details) I get a message saying I am offline, or the site is not available.
Happening for 2 days now.
New to the 255W, Just crusing for all the help / tips I can glean on the net…….
Yesterday I received my “refurbished” 255W. I say “refurbished” in quotes because it was listed on the seller’s site as a refurb but I think it was brand new. It easily updated to the latest 2010 maps (released two weeks ago) with no authorization from Garmin needed (I have heard other refurbs have required a phone call to update). I’m really enjoying the 255w after struggling with a TomTom Go 720 for over three months. By some miracle I was able to return the TomTom for a full refund and get the 255w with money to spare. I’m very happy with the 255w, it was a great upgrade from the Go 720. I just didn’t like the TomTom interface, graphics or estimated arrival times. The Garmin is far superior in all three of these areas which made the difference to me!
I’ve noticed that when I am driving home with the 255w, the side roads go away. That is when I have it giving me the directions. When it is just showing map while driving, it dosent do that. Have you ever heard of this before?? p.s. If I take a road off coarse, they will pop back up.
I have a Garmin 255w and am trying to find the route I saved from mapquest. The send said sucessful, but when I went to look for the route in the garmin I could not find it. Help!
Bill, the Nuvi 200 series doesn’t support importing Routes.
Tim,
I am thinking of getting the 255w but a relative says there is a samll problem with it, or they do not know how to use it yet. It seems you cannot pick an alternate route. For instance the 255w will map me through I95 when I want to go a faster parkway route. No mater what we seem to do it recalcutes and wants to send us to interstate 95. We tried the shoter distance options but again we can’t seem to get it go an alternate route.
Thanks
Page 5 of the manual – “Adding a Stop” (called a Via Point).
Set this for the beginning of the parkway you wish to use.
Or you can use my approach, simply set the route, drive to the beginning of the parkway, or other preferred route, and ignore the “Recalculating” voice prompts/nags. Once on the route you want, it will reroute itself to the destination.
Sometimes I Zoom out, and look at the track that the 255w has set, and just parallel it on my preferred road(s).

I want to buy a nuvi 255. I live in Welland, Canada and San Luis Potosi, Mexico (1,000,000 population). How do obtain Mexican maps and how detailed are they?
Thanks
Fred
Hi,
I have a Garmin255W gps, and looks like i have a problem with it, i installed the ROAD map on it,everything looks great, just that i am located in another way that i should be and deosn’t finds satellites…I’ve tried updating, reset software, everything else but nothing. Can anyone give a solution?
i recently purchased a nuvi 255w (very pleased)however, should i backup the system data on the internal data?
garmin tec told me just to backup the favorites.. what would happen if for some reason the interal data get scrambled….wouldnt it help to have a backup?
many thanks.
I would back up your favorites and the files in the GPX folder. The current.gpx file has your favorites and recent track log. Other files may be your Panoramio downloads. GPX files in the Archive subfolder contain your past track logs. The track logs are a very nice feature of the 255. If you use your car for business, you never have to remember to keep a journal of mileage. Just drop the file into Google Earth and it will show each trip in your car, the date, miles, etc. I does this automatically, each time you stop and start your car.
I just responded via the email i received, however I dont know if you received it….Never the less…
you are very kind to take the time to respond.
come to wichita falls, tx sometime and ill buy you the best steak in town!
mike
steve….one more question if you dont mind in ref to your reply to me about droping files in google earth…..if possible, could you expound on that just a little? i looked on my 255w and did not see an archive subfolder and would LOVE to be able to do what you suggested in regard to keeping up with milage through google earth. do those files (that you suggested) have a particular extension that i could look for? im sure several of us would be very grateful for a little more explanation….
you are very kind.
thanks again,
mike
Mike, it is very rare for the internal memory on a Nuvi to get scrambled. You can make a backup just by coping all of the data on the Nuvi drive.
Mike:
In the GPX folder, there is a file named current.gpx. This contains your favorites, and the track log. Drag the file over to your Google Earth icon to open it. On the map you should see the name of your favorites with a flag marking their location. You should also see a blue track showing where you have been driving.
On the left side, under Places, you will see under Temporary Places, “GPS Device.” It will list your favorites under Waypoints, and your track log segments under Tracks. Expand the Tracks and you will see each segment which represents each time you start and stop your car and your GPS automatically starts and stops.
Make sure the pesky time slider on the top of the map is under control or you will not see the blue tracks. Click on the box next to Tracks to de-select all the segments, which are named “Active Log: Local start date and time.”
Now, select one segment and you will see just that track on the map. Double click on the “Active Log” name on the left and a box will pop up with the details of that segment, such as distance, speed, etc. The top of the box will have the local date and local time the segment started. the bottom of the box will have the start and stop times/dates in Z (Zulu or UTC.)
Your current.gpx file will hold about 10,000 track points before it creates archive GPX files. 10,000 track points is about 375 miles in mixed urban driving. In the Archive sub-folder, you will see: 1.gpx, 2.gpx and so on. These work the same way as the current.gpx file, but only have past track logs.
If you want to see the track points and segments in a spreadsheet format, which shows the track points, time, date, position, miles between points, total miles per segment, etc: Get the Donateware program: G7ToWin. Just drag your GPX file to it, and you will see your favorites under Waypoints, and track points under Tracks. You can also modify your file, select specific segments for example, and then save the file.
The Nuvi GPX files also work nicely for geotagging your photos. I recommend the program: “GPicSync”
Steve….I just tried your suggestion with GE (Google Earth) and I could not make it work. I downloaded the most recent GE just to be sure. I drug ? the current.gpx file to GE, and while seeing the ‘tempoary places’ item, it simply had a box next to it to check. there was no ref to GPS device or a listing of favorites, waypoints etc. I checked it but no results. Also, I downloaded G7ToWin and it recognized my file (current.gps) but only indicated lat/lon info and no total miles, or miles between points.
Now one last thing…I did find that in the folder called ‘Reports’ there is a mileage.csv file that will open in Excel and does indicate track logs with some info. Steve, I do not intend to waste your time, and if i am imposing please advise. Ive never been on a site like this and have no intention of ‘hogging’ the time and space. Never the less, please accept my thanks for both your information and your patience.
Mike
Mike:
The mileage.csv file is part of ecoRoute, and each time you drive a route ( do a Go! to a place) it keeps statistics on your driving, using the gas mileage you entered in ecoRoute.
When you open current.gpx in G7toWin, it shows your favorites. Click on Track then List to see the track points. See if they are showing.
When you drive, do you see a blue line on your screen? In Tools>Settings>Map>Trip Log, mark it Show.
yup….the blue line shows……
ill do some checking.
again….my sincere thanks for your responses.
the offer for the best steak in texas is still a
good offer if you ever make it to wichita falls, tx!
good afternoon!
just a couple more questions please….
google is working fine, but if i understand what you are saying….the ‘tracks’ are determined when i turn my car on and off? then i assume there is a need to keep the 255w running all the time? also, what starts and stops the eco routes? almost through….is there a way to delete old ‘tracks’ that show up when i ’sync’ with Google earth? I delete them but when i ‘resync’ they are back. Whew! thanks for reading this!
mike
When your Nuvi is plugged into a car power socket that is switched to your cars key, the Nuvi turns on and off automatically each time you start the car and turn it off and remove the key. This should start and stop a track segment. You can clear your Trip Log by going into “My Data.”
Each time you do a route (Go to a selected location) an ecoRoute mileage report is computed after you arrive at the location/destination. These can be deleted in the ecoRoute area.
thanks so much!
oh, by the way……what is the difference between Zulu and UTC time?
thanks,
mike
Tim,
I just bought a 255W in London with a full EU maps and would like to use it Singapore and Malaysia for driving between the 2 countries next month. Pls advice whether to buy the CD or SD with maps of Singapore and Malaysia in order to use it. Should I flash the 255W with Singapore and Malaysia maps.
Thank you inadvance for your kind reply. Danny
Danny, see this thread regarding Garmin DVD vs preloaded map card.
Thanks Tim for your speedy reply.
Can I copy my friend 255W bought in Singapore onto a SD and used in my 255W GPS. Can I used 205W maps in 255W which was copied from my friends SD.
Thanks for your kind advice.
Danny, no. They are not unlocked like that.
Thanks Tim. Have downloaded a “Malfreemaps” developed locally and running fine while driving in Singapore. Hope to catch up more on Garmin Tips soon.
Thanks again.
I’ve purchased the 255W but haven’t opened the box yet. I saw Bob’s postings on the 255WT (which Garmin says doesn’t exist). The Bog Box store currently has the 255WT listed as one of their promotions and I’m currently trying to decide if I want to upgrade to it. Could someone tell me exactly what happens with the Traffic Feature? How often is it really useful and how often does the traffic get updated if there is an accident that ties up traffic. Also what is the Eco-Routes Fuel Tracker Feature?
Rene, the traffic data is hit or miss. It depends on where you are (some cities are covered better than others) and how often you are in heavy slow traffic. For many people it is not worth it, and the data is often too far behind (late) to be extremely accurate or useful.
Thanks Tim. I was wondering if that’s the case. I think I’ll stick with the 255W. If the traffic is ever really bad I could just exit the area and it will recalculate for me anyhow.
Hello recently purchased the garmin nuvi255. Very happy. had to return the nextar 43nt very bad graphics and couldnt find certian well known streets. My one concern i am noticing is that when the nuvi is giving directions it doesnt show the street name that i am currenlty on just the next street name i am turning on is that possible to change? and also does it show me the number of miles it takes for me to reach my destination in the begining before it starts counting down?
You can get the distance by tapping on the green bar at the top of the driving view and then tapping ’show map’. As to the current street name, that is really of little value when you are trying to figure out where to turn. There isn’t anything actionable (just informational) from knowing the name of the street you are on.
Steve…..just had a chance to work with my 255W and Google Earth and following your suggestions, it worked like a champ! Super interesting….I feel like I’m the CIA tracking ME when I look at my tracks showing on Google Maps. I’ll bet there isn’t one nuvi owner out of 1,000 that even know that much info is available.Your knowledge and responsive suggestions are boundless. Thanks.
Mike
Mike: For more details, you may want to visit another site where I wrote an article on using Nuvi Tracks. I signed the article with my Geocaching name. http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/page6.htm#tracklogs
Hi Tim,
Can you please tell me the difference between the 255w and the 260. The 260 is $50.00 cheaper but I’m getting the impression, (from the posts here), that the 255w is a better unit. I would rather have a better GPS, than save the $50. Please advise. Thanks
Are you comparing with the 260 or the 260w?
Hi Tim, Thanks for responding. I believe it was a 260w. It had a wide screen. Thanks for your help, Bud
Yes, I’d go with the 255w.
Surely im missing something…..when i come to this site, i never can find the most recent postings and when i click ‘newer postings’ nothing happens. I get the notification that there is a new posting, but i simply cant find it….what am i missing?
many thanks
Steve, the comments appear “threaded” so that if someone wants to reply to a particular comment (like I’m doing to yours) it will appear indented and below the comment I’m replying to. So the newest comments won’t always appear at the very bottom if they are a reply to an existing comment. New comments which are not a reply to an existing comment will appear at the bottom. We don’t start splitting up new comments until there are about 1,000 comments, so the “newer” buttons won’t flip the page since there isn’t a page to flip to. If you have further questions about how this works or if you need help finding a specific comment, contact me.
Hi all..!! Wow..!! What a VERY useful site. I’ve learned much in reviewing the posts… I’ve been on the verge of buying a 255w for over 2 months. Guess I’ll take the plunge..
Question.. I’ve seen references to many sub-descriptions such as 7×5 and WT, etc. Is there a 255w(t) to specifically avoid..?? One more desirable than another..??
Thanks..! ! ! ! ! ! !
Gt
Hi again… I’ve found a 255W that is referred to as “like the rest of the 2×5 series..” Is this a ‘desirable’ series..?? It gives the Manufacturer part number as 01-00718-20 …. Does this designate it as any ‘particular’ version..???
Thanks so much for any advice on this..!!!
Gt
Hi, I recently purchased the Garmin Nuvi 255w and had a question..I noticed that when I approach a turn, it says “turn right in .5 miles, then turn right”. So, it is telling me to turn right twice. Is this a normal function of this model or could something be working incorrectly? I would appreciate it if anyone might be able to help. I want to be within the 30 days to return it if there is a malfunction. Thanks! Jill
That means that 1/2 mile ahead you should make a right turn, then after you make that right turn you will (quickly) make another right turn.
Wow, what a wealth of information you are! I am looking at snapping up a 255w from our company’s internal rewards site, and wondered if it would work for my purposes: Tagging shore locations (and fishing hotspots) in a lake. We travel the same (loooooooong, predictable) route every year to get there, so GPS on the road isn’t too crucial. But in the past, we’ve been stuck out on a 45000 acre wilderness lake in pitch black with just a Blackberry. Unfortunately Google Maps couldn’t update, so we were stuck with a spotlight and slow-going for an hour before we found our bay. I hope it will serve. Thanks mucho!
Steve, the Nuvi series devices are designed for on-road navigation. While you could theoretically mark a location on a lake, it will be a cumbersome, likely frustrating process on a GPS device not designed for that type of use.
Hi Tim,
As Charles Gibson on the ABC nightly news would say to his reporters \Thanks to you\ I had a swelled head on 3 Gps units and you helped me to narrow down to the Garmin 255w. And I bought one the other day and I am pleased with this unit. Not looking for extra bells and whistles.
I had for many years my own radio show and at the same time world wide on internet radio. Playing the sounds of the big bands, vocalist, and group singers. From 1920-1950. I had met some of those entertainers and had some guests on my radio show. Right now I lecture at some of the colleges, High Schools and Senior Citizens Centers.
I have two questions:
1. Since I only have the car charger. Before I leave my house when it’s in the portable mode can I put in my destination ahead of time and then plug it in my car and drive to my destination without losing the information?
2. I have the 2009 maps in my unit and is it necessary to download the 2010 maps? Here in the Boston area roads have not changed and I am not inttested in any new businesses. The reason I am not intersted in the dowloads, because I read that there are so many pros and cons. So I don’t want to throw off my unit.
Once again, many thanks for your help.

I just bought a Garmin 260. I read about but couldn’t find a fix for the “Doctor” and “Saint vs “Drive and Street.
What is the fix for this?
Thanks for your help.
After buying a 255WT myself. I was rather paranoid as well, not being able to find the version off Garmin’s site.
My first observation was that it was probably just a 255W that includes the GTM™ 25 with lifetime traffic accessory.
I then plugged in the car charger/traffic accessory in the car and got the Traffic option up with Navteq – North America. Haven’t had the chance to try it because it probably won’t detect anything at the low traffic midnight highways in Bay Area, CA.
I hope this helps clear things up your 255WT concerns as I just explained the same thing SunshineDel, Roxy and Darren did above.
I have purchased garmin 255W in France in the month of April 09 while I was on Europe Tour. It worked very well and satisfied with the instrument. My question is whether this instrument can be used in other coutries like Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Dubai? or maps can be down loaded?
i TURNED ON MY 255W YESTERDAY AND THE FIRST DISPLAY WAS A SKY VIEW OF THE SAT POSITIONS IN THE SKY AT THE TIME AND A MOVING BAR GRAPH WITH ABOUT 14 SATS AND THE SIGNAL LEVEL FOR EACH SAT PLUS MY LOCATION , LONG AND LAT PLUS ELEVATION, HOW DO i GET THIS TO COME BACK ON AGAIN ?
i AM USING THE NEW 2010 MAP AND SOFTWARE VERSION 5.01………..PUZZLING !
You probably had a finger on the signal strength bars in the upper left area. When you touch that for several seconds you will get the constellation page.
Touching the battery capacity indicator in the upper right will bring up a bunch of diagnostic pages. The problem with doing that is it appears to wipe out the ephemeris data and it will take your GPS several minutes to get a position fix… so do not do this right before you need to use your GPS.
I have the Garmin 255w. Is there a way to preview a trip with a turn by turn such as like mapquest not the 3D
Tim,
I am just about ready to buy the Garmin 255 W hficuowever I am challenged when it comes to installing things. How difficult is it to set this up
Rich
My husband and I have been researching GPS units and have settled on the 255W. He noticed Amazon is selling factory refurbished units at a very good price point. Can you tell me if that is a good option, or should we go with a new unit?
Connie, see our article on Refurbished GPS Devices. Most of the time they are good options.
Entering addresses on the keypad, where is the space key. this is not like the other Garmin I had.
Larry
I have a screenshot somewhere with it highlighted– though I can’t seem to find it right now. They key looks like this:

I’ve never owned a gps. I was considering a Garmin Nuvi 255w or Magellan Roadmate 1440. which would you recommend?
I bought the 255w premium bundle yesterday and noticed when I used the currency converter the date updated says 2007 I updated the gps from the garmin site and still says 07 how do I make it 2009? Do I have to install the free map update garmin is giving me?
I’ve had problems doing a map update on a Garmin 255W. After five “waits” for the tech folks the problem was solved. I had my USB cable hooked up to a hub instead of to the computer’s motherboard. So, whenever doing an update BE SURE to connect your USB cable directly to the MB.
Question: Why did Garmin put out a device that would \lock\ the maps? Is there a real reason for doing that?
Garmin either needs to put out a better product or hire more tech reps. The waits are interminable.
Hi,
I’ve owned a 255W for about two weeks. I noticed that the battery life is only 2 hours. I fully charged the battery both times. I called Garmin, which said that battery life varies. I think it improper for Garmin to state “up to 4 hours” for battery life and not state an average or other disclosures. Is something wrong with my unit?
That is an unfortunate fact about most any piece of consumer electronics… they will state the battery life is “up to” so many hours. Typically, you should be able to get close to that max under “ideal” conditions… on a GPS that would mean things like not downloading traffic data (if applicable), turning down the brightness of the display, turning off bluetooth, not cranking the speaker to max, etc. I’ve tested the battery life on a number of Nuvi devices (though not the 255w that I recall) and have been able to get to the “up to” value in ideal conditions. I’m not saying I support their decision to use that type of figure– but it is fairly standard in the industry.
Tim,
I just purchased a Garmin 255W and find that it has issues with finding a Satellite at times. I live close to a populated city and would think it should be fine however I am often driving and will suddenly loose the satellite signal therefore loosing my ability to recieve directions from the unit. Is this a common issue? Could it be an issue with this particluar unit? I need directional assistance but do not want to waste my money!
See our article on Acquiring Satellites.
Tim
I was lucky to come across your site. Truly a wealth of information.
Just bought a Garmin 255WT, and I would like to update the maps. Is it possible to dowqnload the Free map provided to PC hard drive first, then put it on the Garmin. I would like to do this, just in case something goes wrong with the Garmin, and its storage meduia has to be formatted or something.
Does the 255wt mapping system recognise one way streets?
It would be nice to know.
I recevied the unit today and am really happy about it. I had the volume set at 70% and I have no problem hearing it at all in my old & noisy Nissan Pathfinder. I took the unit on a local drive, it is very accurate, I deliberately did not following the road it sugguested and the unit recalulated the next route right away. I am very impressed with the unit. This is my first GPS unit. I don’t need any fency feature like the bluetooth and the price was very good. 5 stars from me.
Just got the portable Garmin 255w and so far it’s good ezcept who designs these things? Portable for a motorcycle listed in the promo but DOES NOT have a jack for earphones?
I’ll give this one to my wife and would like one with a jack but I can’t seem to find any of the $200 and under priced portable Garmins with this feature.
Jesse
I have been reading all about the 255W as I would like to purchase our first GPS unit. I was looking for help from anyone. My wife is deaf, though she has a coclear inplant which allows her to hear…but not super clear. I would like to go with a Garmin, but was wondering which models are visually better as my wife will look to it before she hears it. I would appreciate any help. Thanks
Tim, I just bought a 255w but I am considering returning it (not yet registered) because the screen is very hard to see during the daytime when it’s bright and sunny outside. I tried adjusting the display settings to daytime(from auto)and 100% intensity and changing the location in the car from the windshield to lower on the dash but nothing helped. I haven’t tried using the night setting during the day. The display is great at night. Any suggestions?
will this version 255W tell me outloud when to make turns and does it have any real time traffic functions so I would know if there is an accident etc or realtime travel times?
Yes– it does have voice prompts. It does not come with any live traffic reporting.
Just bought 255 nuvi. Is it OK for the unit and for the car battery to leave it plugged into the car DC socket at all times? Also in the box was a black plastic disk about size of silver dollar with white cardboard circle on one side, but no expanation of its function. Unit works fine (without it). Just curious what it is. Thanks.
Bob, that depends. Some cars provide power to the power port even when the car is turned off– in which case you risk running down the car battery. The plastic disk is used if you don’t want to suction the mount to the windshield– you can put that disc on the dashboard and then suction the mount to it.
Does the 255W give the name of the current street?
I have the nuvi 855 for about 3 weeks. I thought I would like the voice recognition but I find it is only a toy. I don’t like the slow calculating and wonder if I would like the 255W better. I do like the Lane assist. What model would you recommend?? Thanks,
Larry
Hi!
I just got a 255wt for my birthday. The first time I turned it on and used it, it spoke the street names to me. (Ex: Take a right on Vera Cruz) but now, it is only speaking the directions to me. (Ex: Take a right)
Can someone please tell me how to enable the spoken street names? This is a feature I would really like to use.
Thank you!
I need some decision making help asap. There are two GPSs going on sale in my neighborhood and I want to purchase one. The main reason for making the purchase is so that my son will have one in the car when he drives from here (montreal, quebec) to Philadelphia for a football game. The two I am considering are the TT GO 630 (not reviewed on this site) or the Garmin NUVI 255W (the one review I read about this model losing its signal for hours has me kind of wary). The price difference between the two would be about $50 (with the garmin being the cheaper). This is our first GPS and we are on a tight budget so I cant afford to make a mistake (are these things returnable?). Thanks for any help!
Hi hope this question is not an intrusion but am thinking of getting the 255w….when it says US maps does that include Hawaii?? also if I were to go to Mexico or Paris can I download maps for there?? Will they erase my US Canada maps already in the gps..thanks…I am going to Hawaii in a week and would maybe get one before I went…thanks again barry
Yes, the 255w includes Hawaii. If you go to other countries you can purchase extra maps, either on DVD or SD card. You might not have enough internal memory for both, so the SD card method can be more convenient. Both methods are fairly expensive.
The traffic receiver and power cable are the same cable. They are integrated into one. Keep in mind your three month trial typically will auto-activate itself when it finds a traffic signal, so if you are in an area with a covered signal it might automatically begin the trail.
Yes, I’m right.
ha-ha. Garmin won’t even confirm which GPS chipset they use in their devices, so it is not a surprise they won’t confirm this. Although that might be why they won’t confirm it. My hunch is that they won’t confirm chipsets so that they could swap out with an “equivalent” chip if other sources become cheaper. Those chips might not have the predictive ephemeris technology. Therefore if they list it as a feature they would have to ensure future models have it.
Hotfix was introduced in the version 2.6 application update for the 700 series released near the end of January, 2008. You can see the reference to SiRFInstantFixII at bootup.
Tim,
Thanks for the fast response. Now that the 760 come’s with hotfix. Does the 760 also have the visual turn indicator in the top left corner like the 255w?
The two units (255w and 760)are about the same price. I know the 760 is packed with features, (bluetooth, multi-point, etc).
Is there any advantages of the 255w over the 760?
Mike
No, the 760 doesn’t add the next turn indicator. Only the devices that end in 5 like the 2×5 and 7×5 devices get that feature.
Bob, according to Garmin’s model designations, the 255WT is only sold in a European configuration… specifically part (SKU) numbers 010-00718-11, 010-00718-12, and 010-00718-13. The part number for the North American 255W is 010-00718-20. With that said… garmin has been known from time to time to change specifications on a shipping product without changing the product name, as well as creating new product names that are variants of existing products without telling anyone.
Their lineup can be very confusing even with the 50+ Nuvi models that are relatively straight-forward.
Typically the “T” designation means that not only is the device compatible with traffic services, but that the traffic subscription is also included. In North America, the 255w doesn’t have a traffic subscription included, but the European 255WT does. So if you see a 255WT for sale in North America, with North America maps pre-installed, then my only guess is that it might include the traffic subscription that the 255W does not… but really your guess is as good as mine. I’d check with the store and see exactly what the part number (SKU) is on the box.
Tim thanks so much for your help, what is interesting is the box clearly says Nuvi 255wt and also says it is preloaded with North America, and FM traffic receiver, but here comes the real interesting part just got e-mail from Garmin they say quote you might have a Nuvi 265wt the Nuvi 255w did not come with in a wt version. My my what I have I don’t have strange, I think I better hurry up to the store and request an exchange to maybe the 265wt even though I was sold on the 255w.
Bob, what is the part number of the device you have? Based on my conversations with Garmin, the most likely scenario is that they had an excess supply of 255WT devices destined for Europe, and they reflashed the memory to add the North American maps and then resold them here.
Hi Tim just got new e-msg from Garmin ytech he states very bluntly they do not make a Nuvi 255wt in caps only 255w he further states he has never heard of such a thing. unless the big box store included it as a promotional deal. I know you keep asking about the part number, that would require opening the plastic that the box is incased in, and my fear there is the big box folks would refuse to make a return for the full amount, I think the best route is to return it and ask for a replacement. I had heard such good words on your web site about Garmin but now I am not so sure. A part of me wants to open the dumb thing and see what the part numbers really are but I sure don’t want to lose the money I have put out so far. You have been a great help, so any ideas you have will be of high value to me. I know all this must not make Garmin look to good.
Bob
Tim,
I just bought a 255wt and I was told by the salesman and it states on the box that it comes with FM traffic receiver/vehicle power cable. The back of the box states that it comes with lifetime trafic. The part number is: 010-00718-29. I haven’t regestered it yet, just got it home.
Tim problem solved, I took it back to store and they gave me a 255w in return, they also could not believe the 255wt so we opened the box and guess what not only no 255wt no Fm reciever or 255w it was a 255 only. I am very thankful I had you to lean on, I would not have known what to do otherwise. I know I was like a pest but I needed your help. Keep up the good work you are needed out there.
Bob
Yikes… that is scary. Somewhat strange that Garmin thinks there isn’t a 255WT as their own website lists it along with a part number in Europe. But that is indeed strange. Glad you got it sorted out and good luck with your 255w.
I just bought the Garmin 255wt on June 1st. The part number on the box is the same as SunshineDel’s. I’ve been reading through Bob’s posts regarding his concerns about the 255wt. I was a little concerned myself because although the box says it’s a 255wt, the unit itself has 255w on it. I registered it, and then called customer service about this discrepancy. The guy I talked to assured me I had a 255wt. (Although he didn’t SOUND so sure!) Oddly enough, when I access “mygarmin” on their website, my device shows it as a 255w. It DID come with the FM traffic receiver which I’ve connected, and it worked without me ever having set any subscription up. It’s sort of a plug and play thing. And the box claims it has “spoken street names and lifetime traffic”.
It’s certainly a mystery, but so far (7 whole days!), it’s been working fine. Guess I’ll have to keep the box to *prove* I have a 255wt!
Sounds like the GPS units are identical and the model # on the packaging denotes wether the traffic unit is included or not. So a 255WT is simply a 255W with the optional traffic unit.
Zulu and UTC are different names for the same thing.
