i have my new gps 755t. how can i use it to find where i parked my car?

Barbara. These update files are very large, many megabytes, and can take hours or even days to download on slow dial-up connections. The map updates should not be necessary for proper unit operation. Map updates only contain newer highway and newer business/attraction data. If you have a slow internet connection, it would probably be best if you bought the cd/dvd map update from a store (Walmart has them) and used it, instead of the internet, to update your Garmin.

Were it me, I would use the Garmin as I received it for some time and see just what new highways and attractions I was missing before trying to do an update. I think you will find the factory loaded information to be quite thorough. My Garmin has not been updated in over 2 years and I routinely travel 2 major newer highways that it does not recognize. No big deal. When Garmin puts out an update to included these missing highways, I will probably update mine, or just buy another newer unit.

11/2009. i just bought my new 755t gps. it came with a free offer of an updated download for maps which i understand i have year to complete. i registered my gps, i download the new map offer, i connected my gps to my computer, it recognized my gps and then got stuck on “processing” for hours and hours. i gave up. is the map updates a neccesity for my gps? isn’t there another way besides using a computer to update maps from a little slide disc.? perhaps my computer is too slow or i am just not doing it right.
i am old and not computer savey.

Thanks Tom. I tried to install the latest 755T software from Garmin but it would not even recognize my device, so I could not install it. Bob

Hello Bob. I would try to download and install the latest 755T software from Garmin. If the hardware isn’t damaged, odds are the software has corrupted. A download and install of the software might do the trick. I had a similar “inadequate” GPS situation once in an unfamiliar rural region of South Carolina after dark. I stopped at the first roadside convenience store and bought a paper roadmap and started paying closer attention to road signs. I survived. Good luck.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 755T. It is 18 months old. Yesterday it worked. Today I cannot even turn it on. It should have lots of charge in the battery. I have tried the fix steps listed in the owner’s manual. Still no luck. It left me high and dry in an unfamiliar hugely populated city. Is there a reset button on this thing? I called the Garmin tech line on Saturday and they were closed. I bought one of these models for my daughter and it does something similar. Please help. Thank you. Bob

As an afterthought, the 755T is such a nice GPS I would gladly buy one even if I had to repair it first to get it to work. I’ve used a Nuvi 200 for over a year now and yes it has it’s quirks. I’ve been carried around in circles several times and routed through a cemetery in the less desirable part of a strange town after dark. We had to stop and buy a road map just to get out of rural South Carolina once. We were looking for the Post Office in Lenoir NC and Garmin said “destination on left” and as we both looked diligently to the left at the Fire Station, we completely missed the aircraft carrier sized Post Office on the right side of the street. Wife always says to stop and ask somebody. Yeah, right. Read the road signs and don’t believe everything these toys tell you! Use good common sense to know when to ignore the GPS and keep your eyes on the road. When you pull up to an intersection and see a sign beyond the intersection showing the route you want to stay on with an arrow pointing up, you better question that GPS is saying and has been saying for half a mile to turn here. Just know not to stake your Explorer/Pathfinder reputation on these fun gadgets.

Last week I found the Sony NV-U94 unit on sale for half its SRP and I bought one. It has all the goodies of any high end unit and the price was the same that was paid a year earlier for the bare bones Nuvi 200. The Nuvi is much easier to use and even with the smaller screen seems more pleasant to view. I like the color combinations better on the non-adjustable Nuvi 200, even though the Sony has 7 different colors for each day AND night screens. I’ve already noticed that the Sony overshoots some destinations by a couple or three tenths of a mile, even though I like the Sony’s countdown bar for upcoming turns, which are on-the-money precise. What’s the deal with overshooting destinations? That’s basic not doing the job, nevermind the fluffy options. Another thing I’ve noticed is the uncanny accurate Estimated Arrival Time as shown on the Nuvi. This thing is virtually “to the minute” for 100 mile trips over varying road types and speed limits as long as you keep moving. Understood, If you stop at a light for 3 minutes, Nuvi will add those 3 minutes to the ETA. I have driven 100 mile trips with the actual arrival time being withing 2 minutes of the calculated ETA at the beginning of the trip. Totally awesome!

In my personal experience with a few different makes of these toys, I’ll go with Garmin from now on. Anybody wanna buy a Sony 94 cheap?

My son bought a new 755T for fiance for Christmas. Unit would start but would shutdown consistently at “Show Map.” Unit was sent back to the big online retailer for replacement. Replacement unit did the same shutdown at mapdraw. That’s two in a row that didn’t work out of the box because of mapdraw failure. Called Garmin and was instructed to download Garmin Updater and update the unit’s software. This was done and the second unit now does a proper mapdraw and everything seems fine. The 755T is an overall fine GPS and the unit is well liked and operates just fine now. BUT … !
