Garmin Nuvifone Coming to AT&T?

File this one under “unconfirmed rumor”, but a couple of people at the CTIA show have said the Garmin Nuvifone models on display are packing AT&T SIM chips in them. The reports came from people unknown to us, so we have no way to know if it is true. It also doesn’t necessarily mean that AT&T will in fact be a carrier, but signs seem to be pointing in that direction.

  1. I would consider it if the price was right and they sold unlocked versions. I have AT&T but do not use nor need a plan.

  2. When I demoed a prototype Nuvifone at SXSW Interactive back in March, it had an AT&T SIM as well. I asked Tom Marchioro (Garmin’s Location Based Services guy) about carriers and locked devices, he said that they didn’t have any carrier commitments yet though they hoped to “soon”. He also hinted that the carriers didn’t like the tie in to other web services they didn’t have a stake in. So it may be a while before a carrier signs on, but I know they hoped to make a “big” announcement at CTIA.
