Garmin on Top, TomTom Number 2, Magellan Slips

Gps-Market-ShareDuring the holiday season Garmin sold more GPS portable navigation devices (PND) than any other vendor in the USA with about 45% of the market share. TomTom received 25% of sales, an amazing result considering they have been in the US market for such a short time.

TomTom’s success has come at the expense of Magellan who’s market share dropped from 45% less than a year ago to less than 20% during the holiday season.

These results are not much different than we would have predicted. In the USA I saw lots of TV commercials for TomTom GPS navigation devices, quite a few for Garmin as well, but nothing from Magellan.

During the holiday season, the most popular GPS systems pushed by each manufacturer were the Garmin Nuvi, TomTom Go 700, and the Magellan RoadMate 800.
