Hi Dan-

You can get water depth from this GPS, what you can not get is a route. A route is a series of waypoints that get you safely from point A to point B.

Most of this will soon be moot because a five dollar iPhone app with GPS gets you the entire east or west coast with 1 route. You can now do more with an iPhone than you can with the Colorado 400c. Garmin will have to answer that or their business will fail.

I use mine for boating and I love it. I don't own a fishing boat nor do I want to install a sonar on my nice recreational boat. We can find out how deep the water is from the topo like markings on the water. We use it to navigate back home when we are many miles away. It also gives you efficiant mileage because you travel straighter. I originallly wanted to get a marine only GPS but this unit is about all I could get to fit under my steep sloping windows.

Hi Ryan-

Thank you for your comment. I agree the GPS is good for other functions. The "C" model is being marketed for boaters.

"The Garmin Colorado 400C Coastal Handheld GPS is perfect for any Boater." --Garmin

I disagree with the Garmin statement and am warning boaters not to purchase due to the lack of basic functionality specific to the boating environment.

While i agree that this is not a marine unit i believe that you are being unfair by calling it a \toy\. You should be aware that there are people who use gps units for purposes other than marine navigation and for them, me included, this is a valuable tool. If you want marine navigation capabilities then get a different unit but don't try to diminish the value of an excellent land unit by giving it a bad review for performing badly at something it was not designed to do.

I agree, it isn't a chart plotter and shouldn't be used for serious marine navigation.

True enough. It does not claim to be a chart plotter and I stated that...The trouble is - in the generations before the Colorado and now the Oregon the Garmin GPS' WERE actually marine units with chart plotting funtionality (most of them)...Many consumers are now being fooled by the retrofitted land unit that is pretending to be a marine unit...I respectively stand by my statement that this unit is essentially a toy.
