Happy Birthday, Nuvifone

Happy Birthday, Dear Nuvifone! Or perhaps it would more accurately be called Happy Conception Day, Nuvifone. It was one year ago today that Garmin announced the Nuvifone to the world. At that time there was an anticipated availability date in the third quarter of 2008. But as is all too common in the world of consumer electronics there have been significant delays. Current guidance suggests a release date in the “first half of 2009″ which could put us to the end of June… but we sure hope not.

Garmin NuvfhoneStill, we are looking forward to meeting you someday, perhaps around the same time Apple’s next iPhone could be released. :)

  1. I wonder what O/S it will run on. I hope it is a quad band GSM phone with wi-fi and that they will sell an unlocked version.

    • Never mind, I should have read the earlier info in the link.

  2. The initial version will likely run something similar to what the 7×5 and Nuvi 5000 models are running. It should be quad band GSM, but I suspect we won’t see an unlocked version. Subsequent models may run on Android.

  3. One year ago, I assumed that this concept would be DOA because of iPhone3G. However Apple has completely dropped the ball on Turn By Turn on the iPhone. NuviPhone may still have a chance.

    • I’m pretty confident we will see some good news regarding turn-by-turn on the iPhone 3G before long. ;)

      • Man I sure hope so. It would be a complete shame not to take advantage of the platform.

My Prediction, just for the record is that TeleNav will be the first to market.

        • That probably isn’t a bad guess.
