What do you get when you cross a used GPS on eBay, a broken cellphone, a few scraps of silicone and waaay to much time on your hands? Your own homemade GPS receiver.
Full instructions are available over here if you want to give it a shot yourself. Personally, I’d rather spend $79 on a Lowrance iFinder but I suppose there is that nice “pat yourself on the back” feeling doing it all on your own.

I was looking for a circuit and theory of operation on GPS receiver front ends and found them at http://lea.hamradio.si/~s53mv/index.html HOWEVER, I suggest that you talk to Matjaz Vidmar before you use his circuit for credit in a university class.
You might also contact Maxim Semiconductor at http://www.maxim-ic.com and check out their single chip solutions for a GPS receiver.
And finally the howitworks site has a good description of what is going on inside a GPS receiver.
