iPhone Navigation Applications

We’ve already seen that many people are trying to build GPS applications for the iPhone. Those that rely on the internal CoreLocation service scare me a bit as that type of location finding will only work in some areas and isn’t nearly as accurate as GPS. Those that rely on external hardware don’t sound overwhelmingly encouraging either since the SDK frowns on external hardware and Apple is in control over what applications get approved. But we did see the following which was interesting as we grabbed the SDK…

Apple iPhone SDK Navigation CategoryIn the application form for the SDK Apple asks what types of application(s) you intend to develop. In most cases the list of categories lined up nicely with the existing category list for their iPhone web applications, highlighted in grey. However at least one addition caught our eyes…. Navigation.

Is Apple expecting enough Navigation and LBS type applications to warrant its own category? If so, that would be cool!
