LG LN730

Jan
10
2007

(Considering the LN790? Check out our review of the sibling LN735 which offers many of the same attributes.)

LG is getting into the GPS market in the USA and the LG LN730 is their first entry level GPS device. This device is expected to cost around $350 when available this Spring although exact pricing is not yet known. The LN730 will come with many features commonly found in more advanced GPS devices such as an MP3 music player, photo viewer, as well as the popular SiRFstarIII chipset to provide quick and accurate GPS reception.

A 3.5 inch screen display shows your way on the LN730. It does not have text-to-speech, however. That is found on the more advanced LG GPS models. Another weakness is that it comes with only 1.7 million POIs. So if you expect to need to navigate to POIs frequently rather than predetermined addresses, you might want to look for a GPS with more POIs installed. Battery life is expected to be about 4 hours.

  1. Does anyone know how to obtain a Navteq map of France that is compatible with LG’s LN730? Navteq doesn’t list LG as a supported device on their website.

  2. You would need to get it from LG (if they provide it) since the maps need to be in their format despite coming from NAVTEQ.

  8. I have this model and I can’t get it to say the street names. Do I have to set it up to allow it to do this?

  9. Cameron, the 730 doesn’t include text to speech.

    Tim - March 1st, 2008
  10. Thanks Tim, it gives me an option under set-up/guidance to say road names and numbers, so i figured it would have this option. Thanks for the info.

  11. Anyone have any luck in locating NAVTEQ map upgrades for the LG 730? I would appreciate an email if you have.
    Thx

  12. The unit has worked well for me, but I have also been dispointed by the lack of updates. You can update you favorites to add some POI, but it does not work the same way. They will not gain market share with this approach. I uses google earth to add favourites through POI Edit. You need to use destinator format for it to be accepted by th LG unit

  13. I inquired about a map update back in February and got an e-mail from somebody at LG saying the update would be available March ’08 for a fee, but I haven’t been able to find out anything more. Would appreciate it if anybody knows more.

  14. It turns out that you can load Destinator 6/7 maps onto LG gps. So, go look up that! I loaded mine with UK maps recently of Destinator 6 – worked beautifully – atleast as much beauty as the screen supports.

    yousuf - May 1st, 2008
  15. Anyone from here in the US tried Destinator 6 for their LG GPS unit? I really like my LG 740, but I, like everyone else, am completely fed up with not having any map updates. I am willing to try about anything.

  16. Anyone knows how to set starting point of LN 730 to your designated location? Mine always point to somewhere in Toronto while I am in Vancouver. That’s very inconvenient.

    Mark - May 24th, 2008
  17. Mine was the first post of 2008 and I was looking f0r map updates, some of you found them. Where??? Would appreciate a site name. Also I too would like to start In Vancouver, not Toronto. Any one know how to change the startup map????

    Roger Ansell - May 26th, 2008
  18. LG GPS Navigation System (LN730)
    Toll Free Numbers
    USA: 1-800-243-0000
    Canada: 1-888-542-2623

    Jat - June 5th, 2008
  19. What does it matter where you start up? The only time the map starts in toronto is when you don’t have a GPS signal. If you don’t have a GPS signal, why would you use a GPS?

There is no way to change the start up place.

As for the Destinator maps, I’m in US. I loaded mine with UK maps, went on vacation there, and it worked fine. I don’t see what other type of info you are looking for. The keyword is already given – Destinator maps!

So, if you succeed in finding the latest Destinator maps for whatever place in the world, where ever you are, the loading should work.

    yousuf - June 5th, 2008
  20. Thanks yousuf, you are brilliant. I am looking for up to date maps because new roads and streets are being built all of the time, old ones dissapear etc.. When I startup I am in a garage underground, no GPS signal and I would like to put in my destination before leaving, if I try it will start in Toronto, not home. I could, of course, pull onto the street, block the traffic while I wait for the signal and then put in my destination. Anyone know how to change startup map?

    Roger Ansell - June 5th, 2008
  21. Hey Roger,

I see your problem, but there is a way around it. You see, even though you can’t calculate a route to your destination from your garage (because it will calculate it from toronto!), you can still input your address in the garage.

The GPS comes with “Recent Places” category. So, input your address in your garage. Take your car out into the scope of the GPS signal a day or two later, and then just say “Go to that address I put in two days ago”. It will calculate the route then based on your current location.

  23. Where can I get some extra maps for the LG LN730?

My parents are going to Italy and would like to download that map.

    Thank you

  24. Maps available at LG for $99.00 call the numbers listed above.

    Paul - July 15th, 2008
  25. I don’t see any updates on the website…

    Alex-QC - August 9th, 2008
  26. There are map updates available. Just call LG Canada customer service line and they will transfer you to the parts departments to order a CD. Please note that you have to pay for the map update. price will be around $100? or more? Quantity are limited, so you better order it fast. I don’t think LG is planning for more map updates after this one because they are planning to get out of the GPS business…

    kenix - August 15th, 2008
  27. I phoned LG Canada, and I was emailed an order form and given the following info for updated Canadian/US Maps:
The price is $99.00+tax+ $15 shipping fee.
The parts order form is to be sent to the customer either via email, fax or post.

    SAB32959733: LN730
    SAB32959731: LN735
    SAB3295970: LN740

  28. Yousuf.
What do I need to load onto the 730 in order to get the destinator maps to work? just the maps, or is there something else to load first?
    Thanks

    Paul - August 23rd, 2008
  29. No, just the destinator maps are good. LG’s own maps were destinator maps – if you look at the CD, its got the same icon as destinator.

The way I did it, I edited the LGE Navigation CD1 to include the zipped up Destinator map of the country I wanted to add. Then, loading that CD, GPS thought the map was coming from LG and took it in. Its not super easy to do, but its not hard either:

    0. Buy Destinator maps of the country of choice/ newer maps, etc.
    1. Make CD image of LGE Navigation CD1.
    2. Edit CD image to add the ZIP file and WCE file of the map to add (follow pattern of the rest already included)
    3. Edit MapsAmerica.XML to properly include the new map (follow pattern of the rest already included)
    4. Burn image to new CD and use.

    thank you for your help.
As many others, I am not really familiar with editing and doing all these things. If possible, can you please explaind in details when ever you have time.
I got Destinator 7 and I would like to replace old US and Canada maps with Destinator, but I can not figure ir out how to do that. I beleive the format is something REsomething.

  32. I need a map update for North America (US & Canada)for my LN730, please advise me where can I find it and how much is it. I live in Vancouver, Canada. Thanks.

  33. My LN730 every now and then gives an alarm sound and the name of one of the Folder(s) where I have stored the addresses.

Just cleared them all and still the same – any idea why?

Tried resetting too – no luck.

    ali khan - May 18th, 2009
  34. I purchased an LN730 a few years ago and was told that the maps were easy to get. After many emails to LG, I find their service to be totally inadequate. They were no help and I doubt I will ever buy another LG product. This is not the way to take care of your customers……..

    R Ricard - June 2nd, 2009
    • Saw your comments…the Unit already came loaded with US/Canada Maps – do you need Maps for upgrading and can we download again the old Maps from the CD that came with it and maybe the message “GPS signal too low” will go away?

      mir - June 4th, 2009
  35. I did what you suggested with the map of France but it didn’t work; LN730 does not find the new map on the CD1. May be I missed something. When editing MapsAmerica.xml are you adding the new map or are you replacing one of the existing map? Do I need to also add a ‘.png’ file? where can I find this file? When you did this for UKmap did you also add the EURoads.zip file? Thanks for a quick reply!
