My 3140 does that only if it loses contact with the satelites. Happens very rarely and is quick to recover.

I've had my Magellan for about a year now, and recently, in the middle of the route, it freezes up and just switches to the maneuver list. it wont update its location or read out the directions or anything. even after i have cancelled the route, it wont update its location to my new position unless i manually do it.
Is there any way i can fix this? or is it time for a new gps?

I have a 3140 that I recently used on a trip to the Va state bowling tournament. I'm still not yet up to speed on all of the features, and was using it simply by entering the city and street addresses. This worked fairly well, except that it only got me close to the desired locations. For the two bowling houses we needed, once I was close, I just went to the POI menu and selected the bowling center and the unit took me the rest of the way. The real problem occurred when I entered my home address and started the trip home. The unit routed me 10 miles in the wrong direction, then told me to make a U turn and go 12 miles back the opposite direction to the road I was originally looking for. I've been looking through the PDF manual and can't find any kind of a troubleshooting guide to help me find out what went wrong.

I refuse to use a window mount for my Magellan and had been looking to purchase a vent mount when I decided to have a look at the Nextar vent mount. I was pleasantly surprised to find it fits perfectly into the mounting slots on the back of my Maestro 3140. We have three different vehicles and the mount adapts fine in all of them. It's compact, neat, flexible and I find it excellent. I suspect this same mount would fit many of the Magellan models.

Where did John get the info about the map udates being provided free for 30 days? I just purchased a 3140 and would like to get the updates. I saw the updates on the website, but I did not see anything about requesting them within 30 days.

Actually, in many cases the maps Garmin is using are even older than what Magellan is offering. They both use the same mapping supplier.

Paying $79 for a map update stinks, but it is the norm for the industry. Most in-dash systems fetch $200-$350 for the same map update.

I'm not saying you have to like it.... but that is in-line with the rest of the industry in terms of price and recency of data.

EXERCISE CAUTION

While the design and functionality of this product is very good the Magellan customer and product support leaves a lot to be desired. I purchased the Maestro 3140 less than 4 months ago and found the maps to be extremely out of date and no new maps available on their web site. While reviewing their site recently I found there was a new maps update.

Here is the clichcer. It costs 79.99 and they will only provide it free of charge for products purchased within the last 30 days. There is no literature in the packaging to instruct anyone they have 30 days to update their software.

The update has been out less than a month. This leaves anyone who purchased their out of date GPS with an additional $118.00 bill to bring it up to date.Yes I did say it was only 79.99, but because it is not available for download on line I am being charged an additional $25 dollars for shipping for a CD. This is quite lucrative for such a small item. They are trying very hard to get the printer and ink marketing in effect here.

It is such a shame they lack business sense to the extent they market out of date products with no sense of duty to ensure the product performs well, but rather look for ways to stick it to the consumer with hidden costs and over priced services. Their business practices over shadow the quality of the product they manufacture and this is very unfortunate but even more unfortunate is that it seems to be a growing practice which Magellan obviously subscribes to.

In closing, I was told by one of their service managers the current maps they're MARKETING could be up to 18 months out of date. If you live in a high growth area maybe you want to try TomTom or Garmond. They don't seem to have map datum issues.

I have a 3140 and I can't seem to enter rural addresses such as the civic numbers with the name of the road, only nearest town or city addresses.
