Mitac has actually been building many of Magellan's devices for a couple of years now. So they have an existing manufacturing relationship-- for better or worse. :)

Having worked in the computer industry for 25+ years and ~10 years of dealing with Mitac, I would be concerned about this buy out. I have trained numerous Mitac engineers and redesigned lots of their products - Mitac lacks basic engineering knowledge in terms of high speed signaling and reading spec's.

In spite of the mixed feelings I have as a long-time Magellean owner- if it keeps the lines afloat, it is for the best. Have not been much impressed with Mio product, but the consolidation could well be a win-win.
And I think Tim is surely right- Not continuing the named lines from Magellan would be hard to understand.

My guess is that the Magellan name as well as the Maestro and Triton product lines will continue.

Will MiTAC(Mio) support and develop Magellan's Triton line of products, or is the Triton line dead? Any information on the company's intentions or their commitment to Magellan's current line of products? If they could put a little more effort into developing the Triton firmware, then they could have an awesome product with widespread support.

My guess as to how this will shake out:

I made mention in the forums a while back that I wouldn't be surprised to see Mio exit the US market next year, except perhap[s as a supplier of software services or private build. With this purchase I expect Mio devices to start being released under the Magellan name. They still have a much larger brand recognition than Mio, and perhaps Mio will be better able to manage the support services than Shah Capital was.
