In upstate New York Nextel is working with a school district to provide GPS locating services inside school busses. The GPS system will be able to track the busses as they travel their twenty-five mile routes. School officials can then monitor the busses as they travel the routes and make stops.

Additionally there will be tracking systems for students as they get on and off the bus. The project also includes the installation of video cameras and a wireless panic button for the driver.

“Ensuring the safety of our students is always a priority,” said James McCarthy, South Glens Falls Central School District superintendent. “We receive numerous calls from parents each day wondering if a bus arrived early, late or on time. In the past, we had to interrupt the driver to find out.”
