Paris Hilton TomTom RIDERWhen you think of Valentine’s Day gifts, high technology and GPS probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But perhaps it should, after all, a few years ago Paris Hilton had this crazy Beverly Hills Chopper with a rhinestone encrusted TomTom RIDER GPS. So when it comes right down to it, maybe a GPS for Valentine’s Day isn’t such a bad idea! Continue–> Valentine’s Day GPS

GPS Works like Birthday Cards

Recently I celebrated a birthday which got me thinking… You can loosely describe how GPS works by thinking about the way you receive birthday cards in the mail. Continue–> GPS Works like Birthday Cards

Garmin Zumo 220

Jan

Garmin dropped news today of a new Zumo model for motorcycle riders, the Garmin Zumo 220. Riders have always wanted to really like the motorcycle specific Zumo series from Garmin, but often were turned away by the relatively high cost, so the lower “220″ model might sound appealing. However it will still come with a $600 MSRP. Continue–> Garmin Zumo 220

Motorola MotoNav

Motorola isn’t totally new to the GPS world– I’ve been seeing their devices popup from time to time in places like Stapes. But they’ve never really been that attractive or offered any compelling features. However at CES Motorola was showing off a few new GPS devices that just might offer something a little bit unique. Garmin BirdsEye Satellite Imagery

This is something I’ve been longing a few years before… satellite imagery on a Garmin handheld. It was nearly three years ago when I wrote Why Aerial Images Matter and I feel no less about it today. Now Garmin has finally offered a supported way to add satellite imagery without having to build the map yourself. Welcome, Garmin BirdsEye. Continue–> Garmin BirdsEye Satellite Imagery

Spot it Out

At the CES show I always try to meet with a mix of companies that have existed for years along with new companies trying to launch new products. This year was no exception and I spent some time with a company called Spot it Out. This company is trying build on the content found on an average GPS device and think out of the box when it comes to POIs. Continue–> Spot it Out

Cydle T43H

Jan

In years past it seemed like I was always adding new companies to the product database here. Every month there were new companies launching GPS devices, or existing companies expanding into the GPS market. The list of companies who are no longer in the North American PND market (or are nearly gone) continues to grow…. Dash, Fine Digital, Harman Kardon, HP, JVC, Lowrance, Mio, Navigon, Novogo, Polaroid, Sony, etc… Remember those? Now for the first time in quite some time there is a new game in town, Cydle. Is Cydle worth considering? Continue–> Cydle T43H

Two GPS Questions: CES

Jan
12

At CES I thought it would be fun to do a short, two question interview with a ton of different people. I told the people I was interviewing they could tow the company line if they wished, or they could speak to anything in consumer electronics if they wanted. The point was to try to get some fun answers, see what products various people in the industry use, and get a glimpse of the future. The two questions were:

What was your favorite product release of 2009?

What feature are you most looking forward to using in 2010?

DeLorme Pn-60w, Digging Deeper

Jan

It is worth digging a little deeper into the technologies behind the new DeLorme PN-60w, and specifically the “w” (wireless) part. While some of the wireless features won’t be out until Fall, we’ll fuel some of the appetite now. We’ve seen many of the “front and center” features, now lets dig under the hood a bit more.
