Polaroid GPS plays DVDs
Polaroid has unwrapped a new GPS navigation device, the Polaroid MGX-0550. No, there isn’t a camera in this GPS receiver even though it is made by Polaroid.
The two biggest features of the Polaroid MGX-0550 will be the large, 5.6 inch display and the ability to play DVD movies! Yes, just drop a DVD into the device and passengers can be entertained during your drive. The GPS navigation screens will take over when necessary to alert you to an upcoming turn.

I just got this gps the screen is huge compared to others and the movies display quite well on it as well as the sound too. so its excellent for a on the road dvd player. as a gps it works well if you need a map and directionsto a place. it doesnt seem to have much upgrade options though even though it carries a USB port and a SD ram slot both which i could have not figured out thier uses but all in all it is a fair GPS
Just purchased the Polaroid GPS and love it a lot! My daughter and I were able to figure it out immediately and the large screen is a real bonus. Love being able to save favorite locations, and watch Dvds on it as well.
I purchased the MGX-0560, because of it’s apparent features, like the display size, USB & SD card. However, the USB & SD don’t currently work, so I returned it. According to Polaroid Customer Service, Polaroid will be releasing updates to the GPS, including additional POIs, to be loaded by either of these methods.
Got mine for Christmas and I LOVE IT! I am somewhat of a GPS nut anyway. I have three hand helds I use for diffent projects. My Buds and I have played with it non stop since Christmas. We took it on a Civil War battle field tour and it was amazing. All the POI’s you could want are already in it. I was amazed at how current the road construction was….Thank you my special lady for this present It IS GREAT…
Can anyone tell me how to master reset this unit?
I could not recommend this unit. I used mine 2 times then it had a glitch and would not reset.
Received this GPS system for Chnristmas. Have had to replace it 3 times. The manufacture now telling me they’re on back order so I’m getting my money back.
Customer service, the 8 times I called them was poor at best. Would not recommend this unit.
We have had this gps for about a year and have patiently been waiting on U.S. map updates from Polaroid to take care of map voids where the unit seems to lose specific location and directions. After several phone conversations with Polaroid they are indicating updates will be available in early 2008 for $60. I would have purchased another brand had I known they were going to charge for updates. I don’t think this is common with other manufacturers, is it?
Yes, that is standard practice Gary. Most companies charge from $75 - $150 for map updates.
I have had my GPS crash twice. First time it was replaced. Second time they don’t know me. Save your money on this one.
I had mine about a month and it worked great! And then one day I went to turn it on and now it’s just a big blank screen. The DVD player works, but I would have rather paid good money for a GPS system (sans DVD player) that actually works!! I would NOT recommend this unit if you are looking for a reliable GPS system for your car.
I bought one in Nov. 2006. I used it for about a month or two before it stopped charging. I called to get a RMA# then waited until I had the time to pack it up and ship it out. I sent the system in May 24, 2007 to be fixed and was told that it would be about 2 weeks. It is now almost Dec. 2007, and I STILL don’t have it. Even with many calls and emails to Polaroid to complain. They don’t even seem to care. Do NOT buy from Polaroid. Their products are defective and their customer service is horrendous. I have already filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau on this issue.
I finally received an E-mail from Polaroid regarding Map and POI updates. Customer service apologized for any inconvenience but stated that Polaroid will not support the GPS and that it is no longer being manufactured. I will never buy another Polaroid product.
My inlaws got this for us and I love it for garage sales, you can put in up to 12 locations and it will run you to all of them. However, it is not logical at times, will have you drive right past a location and then come back to it. Also has quite a few areas that are not covered. We still like it, has been a lifesaver finding motels, gas stations, etc. Hope it will have updates available.
Polaroid doesn’t support this unit after the warranty runs out- they don’t replace broken units or work on parts- save your money, and get a Garmin or TomTom, instead- I’m shopping around for a replacement for this piece of garbage, now- my GPS/DVD player constantly gives the warning that “origin/destination points cannot be reached by vehicle”. I called Polaroid, and was told that my error message was a common one, but that they have no idea what it means, or how to fix it- the only thing the tech suggested, was that I turn the unit off, then back on again- really? Like I haven’t tried that, already? I agree with Stephen- I WILL NEVER AGAIN BUY A POLAROID PRODUCT…
