TomTom iPhone app for iPod Touch – Clarification

Oct

Since the TomTom Car Kit started appearing in the Apple Online Store recently, eagle-eyed readers noticed that compatibility was listed for the iPhone 3G and 3Gs, but not the original iPhone (2G) and iPod Touch. This lead to rumors that the kit would not (as in ever) be compatible with the iPod Touch and iPhone 2G. But this didn’t seem quite right so we sought clarification from TomTom. Here it is, direct from TomTom Media Relations.

“While TomTom did make a public announcement that compatibility of the TomTom app for iPhone with the iPod touch is coming soon, we have not publicly announced when that might occur.”

This is in reference to the original TomTom iPhone App press release TomTom sent out on August 17 where they said “Compatibility with the iPod touch and other iPhone models coming soon.”

Other communications I’ve received hint that TomTom is indeed still working on iPod Touch development, and even the original manual for the iPhone app made reference to the iPod Touch which has since been removed.

So I think it is pretty safe to say that the TomTom App and Car Kit will be compatible with the iPod Touch, however not initially as the Car Kit starts shipping out soon.

  1. Dear TomTom, google is making a new GPS app, you may want to go ahead and take market where you still can. No lally-gagging on the iTouch.

  2. Pictures posted at another forum show that the Touch is too short to fit in the TT iPhone cradle. Without an additional adaptor (additional cost?), it doesn’t look like the Touch could possibly work with the mount as designed.

  3. I guess I just haven’t yet seen anything from TomTom to suggest that it won’t eventually work.

“Compatibility with the iPod touch and other iPhone models coming soon.”

Since the iPod Touch doesn’t have a GPS chip (same with the original iPhone) then the only way the apps could work (compatibility coming soon they said) is via an external Car Kit. Perhaps there will be a different Car Kit for the touch….

But the point of the article is that other sites are claiming that TomTom said the Touch will never be compatible– and I’m just not reading it the same way.
