Since this model doesn't have the TomTom IQ Routes feature the routes picked (and time estimates) are often questionable.

Split my time between California and Canada and got a 3rd edition as a Christmas gift, still have free downloads from Tomtom. My advice, don't get a TomTom if you live in North America. 1) Mapshare technology is useless, I have uploaded several changes and TomTom has never incorporated any of them. 2) Roads near my new home (including a new 6 lane major freeway) are >6 years old, they still don't show up on the latest TomTom maps - I still have free map downloads as my unit is <1 year old. 3) On a recent trip to Disneyland, it failed to find the Disneyland hotel by its street address, we were in the 800 block when the address is in the 1500 block. 4) Whatever route planning software it uses, it favors certain routes, in the L.A. area, it frequently adds 50-100 miles to a trip because it chooses to ignore the direct route in favor of certain other ones. Even with manual intervention (i.e. adding waypoints) it refuses to choose the direct route. 5) Whoever programmed in the carpool lanes in the L.A. area did half the job, the machine will constantly tells you to get out of the lane before an intersection only to merge back in after the intersection.

If you have the chance, test it out at the store by asking it to plot a drive that you a familiar with, you will be surprised at the results. I tested it against Googlemap and Mapquest, both Googlemap and Mapquest gave me perfect directions from my home to disneyland (basically, get on highway, merge left, merge right then take the Disneyland exit), the TomTom route added 60 miles and 4 extra route changes.

Brian, there are no free map downloads. If you wiped them out during an update, then call TomTom for support-- they should be able to help.

This is a follow-up on my inquiry of Feb 7th, 2009.
Took my TomTom GPS on Caribbean cruise and it was a lot of fun for me. I had copied maps from online and took them along. By going to "where am I", at any point on the trip I could get the latitude & longitude, refer to the maps and know exactly where we were. When we were near land the islands were shown on the screen, correct shape but not labeled. A TV channel in our cabin also gave our lat & long and it checked perfectly.
Had to take GPS onto our balcony to pick up the satellites as the steel structues blocked them when inside.
