TomTom to Expand Travel Time System

I thought it was just a bad case of deja vu reading TomTom’s press release this morning, but I soon realized we have written about TomTom Travel Time Systems before. You can check out that article for the nitty gritty details, but basically they are using anonymous signals from Vodaphone mobile phones to figure out where all of the traffic is. From there TomTom can offer more accurate travel time (I keep wanting to say time travel) information. This new announcement will bring the service to the UK in the first half of 2008.

“This important development is a major breakthrough in mobility management and route guidance and will significantly benefit our customers. This will clearly improve the daily travel experience of our UK users.” Harold Goddijn, TomTom’s chief executive officer comments. “By working with Vodafone to bring the granularity of information from their mobile network to solve everyday navigation needs, we will redefine traffic mobility in the UK. It is TomTom’s ambition to cover 50% of our installed European base by 2008 and this is another step towards making this revolutionary solution available to more drivers.”

  2. Chris, voice recognition is not a feature TomTom provides on the 720 in North America although there are some hacks available in some areas to make it work.
