Volkswagen Loses Dakar, Blames GPS
The Volkswagen team didn’t win the Dakar rally this year, and the team is blaming lack of a GPS navigation device.
“This year, the [GPS] navigation is a lottery,” Giniel De Villiers told French press agency AFP at Nouakchott. “It’s not fair,” he moans. “Luck should decide the outcome of the Dakar. On Friday, we lost over twenty minutes because we were completely lost and had no idea where we were going.”
Purists however cite that the race was just fine before GPS came along.
The Dakar is the toughest motorsport event in the world and driver and riders alike should rely on their navigational instincts rather that that directions of a computer. You don’t hear Mitsubishi drivers Stephane Peterhansel and Luc Alphand complaining.
